hi

i have DS3615xs as storge server for my media and personal data

anyway i have it for more than 2 years now and it is very stable NAS but i start to feel it is a little bit slow for what it can be (200 MB/S) on average between the volumes

i have 4 volumes of (6*6 tb wd red in raid 5) on the main unit and the first expansion unit

and i just bought another expansion unit with 12 red HDDs and start to think to replace all raid 5 volumes to raid 6 (12* 6 tb)
to have more drives in the array with the same protection which give me almost double the speed of read and write

does it worth it ? any thoughts are appreciated

thanks

With twelve drives I'd go toward raid6, but then again it really comes down to how important your data is. If you have a recent backup and you can deal with a little downtime then go with raid5. If not then raid6 can help.

thanks for your reply

actually i have no back ups yet but i plan to have one in the next few months

yes if i move to 12 hdds array i will do raid 6 for sure
i think it would be dangerous to go with raid 5 with these many drives
