Radeon Technologies Group Update 2016: FreeSync and HDR (PCPer article)

Go look at nVidia's Facebook page. They do neat stuff all the time. I can't wait for a game to use Physx Flex... YouTube that. They have 300 engineers just working on gameworks. They make some neat things and it's only getting better.

AMD has their own set of features that are less useful for my goals. Except maybe VR.

I tried to play Killing Floor 2 which features PhysX Flex and it ran so terribly bad that I uninstalled it within 30 minutes. So I thought well it's a driver issue so just wait for release. I called my buddy who runs Intel / Nvidia. Game ran like crap for him too.

Not too impressed with PhysX Flex at this point. Maybe in the future I will be.

Damn, and I just got a shiney new 4k monitor...

Still, better monitor technology can't hurt, I am all for better contrast. Hopefully this will help migitate the Glow/bleed issues so many monitors are having.

By pushing monitors into higher brightness needed for HDR, glow and bleed is likely to get worse in the short term.

Well Physx is one of the most intensive features. I have a dedicated card just for it. It sure isn't free. Hell my Titan X had problems alone with Borderlands 2 and that game isn't exactly known for realistic graphics. Ran great with a dedicated card though. Actually added a lot the atmosphere of that game. Honestly I am surprised PhysxFlex even runs on a CPU. I assumed it was a nVidia GPU feature.

I guess the most applicable AMD tech for me might be their two card VR solution. Free sync can also be of interest in a few years when I upgrade my monitor.

It ran so poorly that I couldn't tell you if it was on or of from the stuttering. I'll wait for release and a proper driver.

Yeah you should be able to disable it. Sounds like the game might just run like crap? :)

You are a fucking joke, if the editor in chief acts in such a childish manner no wonder why the real enthusiasts left and this forum went down the drains. Ps this is why you will never get nice things from radeon tech.

Saying the truth and whats on one's mind is a good journalist. The ones that are afraid of saying something are the ones that can't succeed, getting free hardware from a company that blacklists numerous website is not worth it. The absurdity of your comments fall on you.

PS this is why this forum has gone to shit, people don't think on this forum anymore (well vast majority).

Its all about feelings and emotions, well if you feel that way please go else where.

Really? So, you expect someone to demo or report on a slide show? So, they should just report in gushing tones on an AMD "promise"? Look, I am an AMD fan but, they have been really screwing the pooch lately.

Why argue? Just follow where pretty much everyone left to.

Because of your last whining over the Radeon Fury? You didn't seriously think your little rant wouldn't have some consequences, did you?

^bingo he gets it unlike razor, yakk and man of god. The reason he was not invited was his childish rants, kyle even said the 380x does not deserve an award. why would you invite someone who has written off your company nor give that person anything thats like giving a criminal a your gun to shoot you.

What have they been screwing lately?

I don't understand why Kyle was so hostile about this. AMD is reacting logically to his recent actions, we all saw how he made it publicly known that reporting on Crimson was beneath him and he didn't like Nano either. So they logically assumed he wouldn't care about new software initiatives and new hardware and thus was not invited to this latest event.

The irony is they talked and demoed a LOT more than just this HDMI and Freesync update, OpenGPU was under a staggered NDA to trickle out the news(they have done this many times in the past) and there's probably more to come that's still under NDA.

Dunno either, but he single handedly gutted this part of his forums.

Too bad, but meh.. whatever. [H] should probably just drop reviewing AMD hardware altogether at this point instead of this bizarre behavior.

The consequences were bad for AMD, they had to publicly apologize to all sites that were blacklisted for the Nano incident with moderation, that means the AMD employee that did that, was doing it on his own accord not on AMD's behalf. Upper management isn't stupid when it comes to these types of screw ups, that's why there was a moderator so the point was clearly reverted to the employee screwed up. They did what they did to save face. This is not a consequence to what happened with Nano. This is AMD trying not to give any amount of reason to be shown in bad light for any of their products, but it doesn't work that way. Trying to avoid a situation is the same thing as creating that same issue.

There was no need for the rant if AMD PR did their job. They failed pretty badly at it when you trying to poison the people that need to generate "PR" and try to play the field by favoritism will only end up chasing people away from your product.

Youtube is a general example of rampant control by PR (in whichever embodiment) shoring up likes, biased reviews and one sided paid for content. Not that it does not have its fair share of decent enough content.

If I cannot get a review on here for AMD hardware then there is something wrong very wrong.

you see fellas in the real world when you rant and curse and tell people to eff off, things like this happen.... not one of you would act in such a manner in your jobs, would you?

Sure AMD messed up and it has been beaten to death but Kyle took it to a whole new level.....

Sure I am disappointed in them and I show it by not buying their stuff. before my current card, my previous AMD card used for gaming in my desktop was a 4870....

There are worse things in life.
And the last thing I would expect from AMD is that it would have a negative effect for this website, AMD should have other more important things to worry about...

I do if the situation allows it, and I'm sure many people do, some times people have to put their foot down, of course when its said and done, there is no reason to talk about it anymore. But its all about the situation.

Kyle in this situation, said he will not talk about a slide presentation because there is no way for an independent look at what AMD is doing. Which is by his right to do, since H has always been like that. Its one thing to write up a small snip it of what AMD is doing, but another thing for AMD to ask Kyle to promote something that isn't even ready yet even for basic testing or just looking at it, don't even need to test.

There would be more negativity if Kyle wrote up the snip it and then voiced his opinion by giving examples of failed attempts from AMD/ATi past?

AMD needs to stop messing up.

What [H] did (resisting corruption) was commendable and should be looked positively on. I'd be pissed too given the circumstances.

I can "put my foot down" without using one single curse word. All you have to do is say "excuse me, I have to leave" and leave it at that. Here were I work, the last person that cussed a customer was escorted out less than an hour after it happened... Cussin' at people just simply isn't tolerated here...

The irony of this post is that a lot of people come across as not thinking for completely different reasons. How many people were complaining this hard about amd slides or pr before Kyle made a big stink about it? It seems to me a lot of people are a bunch of followers, taking ques from the worries of others and letting others thoughts stand in for their own.

Kyle made noise about x, and now people come out of the woodwork that were not complaining about issue x before. Monkey see monkey do type follower types. Think for yourselves and form your own independent thoughts. Dont just jump on bandwagons.

Cussing a customer is different than cussing at a fellow worker, I've cussed at my boss and my bosses bosses before and these people are VP's and SVP's of a major TV network, but I was justified to do it. Justification is what matters.

Kyle is not AMD's PR nor their lap dog. So when H wants to do a and is prepping to do something for H's sake, and AMD gets their panties in a bunch and starts black listing guess what it will come back and bite AMD in the ass.

This is a dam shame too since back in 2013, AMD was doing much better PR with Kyle and the 290x crossfire setup. He even had the crossfire setup in his main rig and worked really well at the time but, my, have far they have fallen.

I agree, there are so many ways to handle different situations, AMD just has been picking the wrong ways. For something like this, do a press release that is fine, then have individual interviews with sites, there might be some negative feedback, but by doing so, AMD can easily counter or mitigate anything negative because now they would have more control over the interview by responding to the negative comments quickly.

The negative stuff that came out of this, is AMD's prior commitment to dev rel, and open source. Easily countered by explaining how they are approaching that aspect.
Number 2, its just slides, AMD can counter that, yes they are but this is the work we are planning on doing to achieve a certain goal. They can go indepth I'm sure, since they are planning on it. If it ever materializes, doesn't matter cause that's down the road. But no one can say anything to counter that in the short term.

This is what PR does, mitigate anything negative that might come up, they should be thinking about this every time they do anything in public, they can't keep putting their foot in their mouth time and time again, and not be expected to called out on it.

You do realize you are basing all this on the word of one person? Kinda hard to judge the situation when you only have one side of the events. Don't forget it is "yours, mine and the Truth", 3 sides to every story.

perception is rarely based on all three.

usually just one.

What you are communicating is not what you are saying, but how it is perceived.

My perception, for example, is that Kyle was being a dick.

Others believe he was being altruistic.

The truth, im sure, is somewhere in the middle.

He did seem to go overboard. Knowing his age, he acted more like he was 20 years his junior. Age usually speaks wisdom and it does seem scant of any in this situation.

Not really - if any other company did it people would want to crucify them. Since it was done by living saints from AMD it obviously was fault of shitty biased tech sites that they were denied the glory of touching Fury Nano press sample.

Exactly. AMD straight out in front of everyone tried to corrupt the tech review space. And the people here are focusing on Kyle saying a bad word. I can't comprehend it.

Yes -- Roy screwed up his job; AMD didn't handle the situation well when Kyle, for the sake of good ol' fashioned independent journalism, didn't want his site being reduced to the role of "AMD shill" or "AMD PR lackey". Which is as it should be, otherwise many of us wouldn't be here.

And for that matter, Kyle & Co. actually did detailed reviews on the Nano and showed that it has its place for a very particular niche -- and that the Nano is the logical output for Raja, based on his previous work with Apple. It should be fairly evident that Raja with Radeon Technology Group is steering it more towards an "Apple-centric" model, if that makes any sense. Nano and Fury/FuryX are essentially test beds for that line of thinking (obviously RTG doesn't have anywhere near the budget/resources that Apple commands).

In other words, I don't understand what all the fuss is about -- "random folks" calling out Kyle for "lack of respect" for AMD when all he is doing is maintaining his journalistic integrity? Kyle's always been blunt, this is his style. You know that, I know that, AMD definitely knows that.

Yep totally agree with that. I can see where Kyle was harsh with his tone, which was definitely in his right to do so with the Nano incident, I would be pissed too if I was getting the review for the Nano ready and buying components and at the 11th hour was told that I wasn't getting one. That was a dick move. Then worse was the way Roy handled the situation after.

I wouldn't go so far as apple centric, Apple appeals to a certain crowd, pretty much people who don't give a rats ass about the underlying architecture and technology in general. They just want easy of use and prettiness.

What did come out of this was how weak their PR team is, they weren't able to foresee what their actions and comments would be perceived, and to put this bluntly, everyone in their PR team should be fired for such mistake. I'm not sure if it was miscommunication from their marketing team to PR or vice versa but once the cat is out of the bag they just didn't know how to handle it.

You are right, Kyle has always been blunt and straight forward, and that's his job to be. When people call out "lack of respect" that Kyle has, Kyle doesn't have lack of respect for AMD, he has lack of respect for what they are doing marketing wise and how they are approaching a situation. Its actually AMD's lack of respect for him and other journalists that should be pissing people off, which is where this thread has kinda talked about.

Kyle was sent benchmarks for Fury Nano done by AMD, and he stated he isn't going to talk about that in his website, that is what initially brought on the Nano incident I think. Please correct me if I'm wrong. This is the same type of situation, slides and nothing else. What AMD didn't learn from their first mistake?

Did any of you read the follow up of WHY AMD denied a number of sites a Nano? It was stated that only a few sites where the niche the Nano was aimed at had a strong enough following were to get one. Seriously look at the traffic here, especially in that particular case usage. It is a barren waste land here.

Kyle threw a tantrum and seems most of you blindly followed even after the facts were given.

Yeah, and the 3.5GB incident was also a communication mistake, right?

Truth based on Kyle, techreport, tech powerup etc? Yeah no its based on how AMD seperated sites that gave Fury X and Fury and other things AMD has done bad press.

Roy's statements were very clear what he thought these sites were, hence the reprimand by AMD.

"Blindy followed".:D At $650, the Nano was a complete joke. The only time it was worth it was when Tigerdirect had a fire sale on the for $405 but by then, I had already purchased a 980 Ti which is much faster. (I am an Hugh AMD fan to and miss using them in my home gaming build already.)

Sorry but, AMD screwed the pooch this time around and I think they realized it but it was too late at that point. Kyle did not throw a fit but, he just let us know here, on his forums and board, what happened and what he thought of the situation. If you do not like that, I suggest the door over there to the right.

That was a total line of Bullshit by AMD to attempt to misdirect not giving review material to sites that call a spade a spade.

If my memory serves me correctly, PC Perspective and Anandtech got review samples.....true hotbeds of the ITX-Steam machine console crowd, I'm sure..... Come on, the Nano is touted as a 4K GPU, is that not an enthusiast product, or did I miss something?

You can put all the lipstick on the pig you want.....

Kyle comes down on bullshit, always has, one of those if you cant stand the heat things, which is why I like it here. The rest of the world can hold hands and sing kum-ba-ya. I like my information straight to the point.

H did a very honest and well done Nano review after they got the cards. The article was very well done AND showed the Nano positively.

I think a lot of you don't have a very long memory......not too long ago H was touting Eyefinity and had a lot of sponsored events in and around Dallas to show off the tech. That being said, lately AMD has just thumbed their nose at any site who calls their bullshit exactly what it is.

If AMD was over the Nano thing, H would have been at this latest event, but it was smoke and mirrors and they would have been called out, no doubt.

Do you need me to link a timeline for you? Seriously ever since you purchased a 980Ti your posts have shifted akin to those you used to speak against. Even here you are selectively refraining to acknowledge the facts as they are just so you can validate your argument.

1st. Kyle returns from said meeting ranting they weren't getting a sample, for an unknown reason some speculate (not cold hard facts) it was their previous FuryX review.

2nd at some point later it is released that AMD only gave Nanos to those with stronger HTPC followings. Which most here agreed Hard does not have.

Each on this site can easily be proven as stated fact and that each and every one of you were aware.

AMD seems to be following Apple in the case of the Nano as far as creating value for their products with low power usage and a small size while maintaining high end performance. You have to admit that the Nano is in a different league compared to a SFF 970. I'd expect to see similar products from them in the future. Personally I welcome niche products as long as you cover the core audience first.

AMD's only failing was to cover the space occupied by the 980ti. Everywhere else they are tied or better than the competition. Heck in some places they have multiple offerings such as the regular Fury for those that want slightly better than 980 performance and the 390x for those that don't mind slightly less than GTX 980 performance.

People can call the 300 series a refresh all you want and that's true. It is also true that they are just as good or better than the Nvidia offerings in the same price bracket. In the end it all comes down to marketing and brand recognition. That's where AMD failed.
