The Drone Racing League (DRL) has managed to build the fastest drone in the world: the DRL RacerX, which is actually capable of reaching a top speed of 179.6 MPH, has claimed the Guinness World Record at 163 MPH. (The official recorded speed is lower because the organization requires an average of the different speeds documented on the measurement course.) The previous record was 125 MPH.

...the Drone Racing League (DRL), the global leader in professional drone racing, tested the fastest racing drone, and set the Guinness World Records title for the fastest ground speed by a battery-powered remote-controlled quadcopter. Hand-built by DRL's Director of Product, Ryan Gury, and DRL's team of expert drone engineers, the drones fly at unprecedented high speeds. The fastest racing drone, the DRL RacerX, zooms at a never-before-seen top speed of 179.6 miles per hour.

I didn't read the article but I wonder how they do it... Looks like to use googles ? Makes me wonder the communication standard and the latency... nonetheless VERY impressive... (Did it crash at the end lol?)

So it actually counts if they crash? No rules like the land speed record in that they take the average time in both directions so you can't use the wind to your advantage.

no they should have to make 2 passes

at lest fixed and single rotor have to so quads should too

Last I saw, drone racing usually uses analog video transmission to reduce latency and hardware overhead. The view can often be affected by interference, but when racing it's better to have a fuzzy picture than a late picture.

But your not doing full 180 turns and flips and what not in fpv. That has to be disorienting as hell

I have foam aircraft that can hit those speeds. My 4s EDF powered Squall has been on radar at 186mph. That is fast for rotor powered aircraft though. I have seen a video of a RC helicopter hitting 170 mph.

Cool video on the speed limits of rotor flight.
