I had several stores open Wednesday morning and bought a 5800x3d the first place it showed up (New Egg).

From a 5800x. Kind of silly maybe, but the x3d looked like it would help in some games. And the tech looked really cool. And the way the last few years have been, sometimes I just put more emphasis on now than I used to...

Same here going from 5800X to the 5800X3D, I grabbed one from Microcenter yesterday. 8 cores is all I need right now and I wanted to check out the new tech. Though I want to get a better AIO cooler before installing it.

If you're buying something new right now, I don't know if it makes sense to invest in a DDR4 platform.

If you're coming from a well performing Zen 3 5000 series CPU, it doesn't make much sense either.

If you're coming from a Zen 2 3000 series and you want a drop in upgrade to your existing motherboard, then it makes sense.
It is not worth investing into DDR5 period yet. This time next year we will have even faster DDR5 sticks for a lot less. Also a platform that actually can take advantage of it.

Yep, you can get a good B550 or B660 with quality ddr4 for cheap now and there will be alot of us that will pay good money for your used stuff in a year or two.

Around 2% going from ddr4 3600c16 to DDR5. With a little work, you could run 3800c16 or better in gear 1 and close that gap up even more.

I see that the new 5800x3d price has jumped up in places to about $600.00 already. I guess because they get snapped up as fast as they appear.

Seen that as well, better off just getting a 12900K in that case and enjoy the multithreading benefits with the gaming performance experience indistinguishable in general.

Unless you already have an am4 board you plan on putting it in. It's still better than having to do a full upgrade.

I decided to swap my 9900KS and MSI 390 MPG Gaming mobo for a 5800X3D and Asus TUF Gaming B550-Pro. My rationale is I can still use my Noctua DH15 HSF, DDR4, and all the rest of my parts. It should be a faster PC in every respect, and if I were to swap my 3090 FE out for a 3090 Ti, I shouldn't have to worry about CPU bottlenecking anymore or power deficiencies with my existing Corsair AX850 PSU (since the 5800X3D is so power efficient).

Seemed like a no-brainer to me for my gaming PC...and I have the upgrade itch :). This new AMD chip is pretty impressive. I realize AM5 and Raptor Lake are right around the corner, but something always is.

So I originally got my 5800x3d as a test for mining performance and maybe some clickbait youtube videos, but it looks like I might have to put it into my main PC. Gaming performance on MMOs seems much better (~40 FPS in WoW according to some people) so I hope that translates across the board to most MMOs. Kingdom Come Deliverance is also ~30% faster vs a regular 5800x.

A little over a year later and most of these cpus are about 2/3rds the price as originally posted.

If only GPUs followed suit.
Just guessing, but might suggest where the margins are at, CPU vs. GPU. We might complain about the GPU, but perhaps were really getting price gouged by the CPU.

I dont see any reason to complain about cpu prices, at least in the mainstream. The fact that you can get 32 GB ddr4, an r5 5600, and a solid motherboard for $400 or less is cause for celebration. While Zen 4, ADL-S, and RTR-S are significantly better, anyone short of an RTX 3080 will see little difference, especially at 1440p and above.

That's not my point. You're happy with the "price", I'm just suggesting you may be getting ripped off, you're just happy with that.

Well, just snagged a 5700g on marketplace for $120. I was going to get a 4600g online for $100, but this apu will be much better.

Nearly 2 years since posting this and AMD has another round of cpus for AM4.

5700X3D $240 for a 5800x3d reduced clocks.
5700 - $175 for a 5700g with no igpu
5500gt/5600gt - $125/$140 Both 5600g with clock variations.

Amd also released the 5600x3d for $230 last year which was a microcenter exclusive.

Cheers to AM4 and there looks to be little chance that AM5 will be done in 2025.

Pretty nuts about the 5500/5600gt. Considering that Vega graphics are on their way out.

Out of the whole list the 5700 is the real questionable choice if you ask me. The just like the eG APUs with less cache and no PCI-E 4, and now you don't even have the graphics. yuck.

Interested in the 5700X3D if it's meant to be a bit of a gift to legacy enthusiasts. Will it clock up at all? Dropping in an expensive 5800X3D gets less ans less appealing by the day but maybe this might be the true AM4 budget last grasp?
Anyways AM4 has easily cemented itself as the greatest MB platform of all time in my eyes. If you just list all of the compatible CPU's it supports it is just ridiculous. I venture to say other then a crushing economic circumstance in the future, it will never be repeated.

Yeah, I would avoid the 5700 at all cost. The cache cut and pci limitations really hurt gpu potential.

2024 and AM4 still crushing it. The 5600x is a better buy than the 5700 if you dont need full x3d performance - faster at gaming and single thread and not much slower in mt.

I guess its AMDs way of getting rid of junk sicone with dwindling zen igpu supplies.
