My friend has a Phenom II X6 hexcore for sale and is willing to sell me locally for a cheap price. Right now I am using a 955 BE, can I simply just drop the new processor into my MB and not have to reformat or would I need to reformat my OS if I did that?

Generally processors don't require a reformat. As long as you don't change chipsets (new motherboard) you should be fine. Just make sure the bios is up to date and the motherboard supports it.

Make sure bios is up to date, that's the most important thing. Most older boards will not work correctly with an x6 if they're not updated.

Windows 7 is really good about hardware changes. Most of the time, you do not need a reformat even when changing motherboards, graphics cards, etc.
