I'm looking for a new laptop with a budget of 500 US dollars. This laptop will be used for school work. Mostly office and web browsing. Maybe some music.

I can't decide if a dual core is the way to go or single core good enough. I'm leaning toward a dual core due i want the computer to last me for quite awhile. Seems multi cores are becoming more popular. Programs will take advantage of that.

So i guess my question is. Dual core the way to go for future proofing or am i over doing it for just basic school laptop?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well you can definitely afford a dual core with $500.

You can get some pretty decent laptops for $500.

You can notice the hard drive difference if you're loading a few things at once, like Opening firefox + AIM + Windows Live Mail

If you're intending just to web browse then realistically you won't notice.

Are you looking to play 3D games as well? Or solely browsing, word proecssing, and music.

the Intel GMA should be fine for those things, even movie playback will be fine via streams

Since it's for school, you should check out the dell EPP program. Either that or the Lenovo education program, they offer decent discounts that stack with coupons
