Query-Based Distribution Group

I build query-based distribution groups all the time and can't think why this one is causing me so much grief. In AD, I have an OU called "Technicians". Within "Technicians" I have regular technicians and technician team leads (managers). I go into a technician's account and set the "Manager" field to that tech's team lead. So basically I create a heirarchy/pecking order within AD of the technicians OU.

I create a query-based distribution group and create a custom query. On the "advanced" tab I select "Field", "User", "Manger" then set the condition to "Is (exactly)" and fill in "John Doe" in the value field (names changed to protect the innocent :) ). I test my query by clicking on the "Find Now" button and no records are found. So I test by replacing "John Doe" with "*" and then I get the results as expected.

So then the question is, what kind of value is expected if I select "Manager" as my field I want to query against? I've tried the following:

John Doe
John.Doe
JDoe
[email protected]
[email protected]
Doe
John
D*
J*
Doe, John
cn=John*
etc.

Any help is appreciated.
