Hi, im looking to buy some decent quality RJ-45 plugs for a Cat5e network. The ones i have function ok but the clips are forever breaking, and im always having to redo them

What should i be looking for? and where should i be looking?

Any help would, as always, be most gratefully appreciated.

Cheers,
Steve ;)

We use TE Connectivity, used them in our FTTH installs for the last few years and had no issues.

I use the ones from Monoprice, work fine for me, never had a single issue. In fact, i can't say ive ever had an issue with ANY RJ45 connector

2nd, cheap as hell but have held up really well.

Monoprice has always worked well for me. I use the plug guards over them though.

I use nothing but these: http://www.smarthome.com/89210/EZ-RJ45-Cat-5-Connectors-50-Pack/p.aspx

Along with the matching tool: http://www.smarthome.com/89245/Platinum-Tools-EZ-RJPRO-HD-Crimp-Tool-100054C/p.aspx

The wires extend out of holes in the front of the RJ connector. It makes verifying color order easy and also you don't have to bother with cutting the right length.

The crimp tool has a blade that will cut off the excess wires flush with the front of the RJ connector.

They also sell matching strain reliefs: http://www.smarthome.com/89275/Platinum-Tools-100035-EZ-RJ45-CAT5e-Strain-Relief-50-Pack/p.aspx

Those ends are expensive. I will stick with the monoprice ones tyvm.

If you look around you can find them much cheaper than that... I just posted those websites for reference. The 100pc and 500pc jars are cheaper per piece as well.

They are a little more expensive than standard RJ45s regardless, but if you are crimping a lot of them, its worth it.

Sorry, i really should have mentioned that i am in the U.K.

When looking at my pre-made Belkin patch cables i see a far superior connector that i can clip in and out all day without the locking clip breaking.
I dont need to buy in bulk as im only maintaining our own home network, so im not too bothered if there a little bit more expensive, just as long as they're durable. ;)

The plat tool is in my tool bag. I bought some of the ends and love them, I can hit them faster for sure because you can pull them through. I have not refilled them though because of the cost.

+1 to the monoprice bags.

I buy Leviton 8P8C CAT5 connectors at Home Depot and have never had any issues with them. I also use a decent crimp tool, a Ideal branded (non-ratcheting) crimper. Having a good quality crimp tool and good end connectors means years of quality crimping jobs. Stay away from the junk/cheapie end connectors and crimpers. You get what you paid for.

Leviton, and put boots on them if you find you often snag the tabs

I did some research on this a while back and doing this on a budget in the UK is fun. I wanted the EZ-RJ tool but couldn't justify the price.

In the end I bought an Ideal Telemaster 30-496 (non ratchet version) for £15 off eBay, think they are around £30 new.

Then used it with these types of ends

Found on eBay for about £15 per 50 pack

While I don't have any professional test kit, every time I have fixed/made a cable using these it's worked first time no speed issues.
