Quake 4 settings won't stick!

I've got the latest version of quake 4 (1.3 i think) and whenever i change the graphics settings in-game, the game tells me they will take effect next time i load the game, so i close and re-open quake 4, but all the settings are back to the old values. Any ideas how to fix this?

Sounds like the config file got write protected. Find it, and turn off write protection. I've had that happen in a few games before.
