To those looking at the deal for a retail version of the q6600 for $190 at Fry's, be careful. This is what one person had to say about it on reseller ratings.

"I ordered the boxed Q6600 from Fry's. I was shocked and so upset that in late March 2008, I can still get a crap B3 stepping from market! This is totally unbelieveable! Q6600@B3 stepping can be considered as a TOTALLY different product as Q6600@g0 stepping."

By the way, the reason I'm posting here is because I don't have the 50 posts yet and that's required to post in the Hot Deals section of the forum.

three of my four q6600 purchases have been through fry's combo deals and all of them are g0's. stop trying to turn one incident into anything more than what it is.

Oh noes!

Wake us up when you get more than one complaint.

Well unless they advertise that they are selling you a G0 then there really is not a valid complaint here.

I agree that there really isn't anything to complain about, but it is a heads up to anyone purchasing a Q6600 online anyplace other than clubit.

For sure, if you would not be happy without a specific stepping, you need to order one specifically. This also applies to pretty much every component that goes into a PC sincce even hard drives, motherboards, video cards, etc, etc may hae differing degrees of effectiveness.

Someone please close this thread. Why didn't you post this in the Q6600/Fry's thread that already exists in the 'Hot Deals' section?

Finally caved in and ordered one. Still on an old 939 based 3800 X2 system with AGP. Couldn't pass up the opportunity. Grabbed a $99 Abit IP35-Pro and a $186 MSI 8800GTS 512. Should be quite the jump from the old 3800X2 and 6800GT.

Expected delivery is Monday for the Q6600. Will post the stepping when it arrives. The HotDeals thread seems to indicate they are shipping all G0 now. Hope so.

You won't be disappointed. I went from 939 (though not quite as antiquated as yours as I had PCIe) to my current setup (specs in sig) and the difference is very substantial.

I plan to order Monday I hope it'll be G0. I just called them and the guy couldn't tell me because he didn't know.

ClubIt has guaranteed G0 for $229.
I guess if you want to pay the extra cash, at least you know you're getting the good stepping.
:p

I just checked 3 deal boards and the [H] thread. Everyone who ordered in April got a G0, not a single person reported receiving a B3, unlike last month when it was $10 cheaper.

That's not a guarantee, but it points to pretty good odds that outpost is finally out of B3 stock. B&M has only had G0 even before Black Friday last year when I got mine.

The way you guys are talking makes it sound like G0 are the only Q6600 that should be out on the market?

Are B3 discontinued or something? I always thought it was G0 that was discontinued and blablabla

Only asking since I've seen people on other forums trying to pawn off their G0 Q6600 for WELL over the retail price ($240-270) JUST because it is "G0"

B3 was replaced last year by the cooler running and potentially more overclockable G0.

Getting a B3 revision isn't really even a problem. It's still an easy overclock to 3GHz, and uses about 10W more than the G0 under load according to the Anandtech review.

But it is a little surprising that outpost shipped some people B3 steppings last month. Someone cleared out some old dusty stock.

I think I read the same review that pxc did over at anand. They also found that the max stable overclock wasn't much different between B3 and G0. G0 just reached it's frequency limit at a lower voltage and consumed a bit less power.

I just got finished placing my order for a Q6600 from Fry's, in the confirmation e-mail it was listed as "Intel Core2Quad Q6600 Bx Core2Quad 2.4GHz@1066FSB".

what is this 'Bx' supposed to signify? :(

I don't know that it signifies anything beyond their internal inventory system. Mine said the exact same thing, and I got a G0 (SLACR) with the newish bright blue box. You are over-thinking this whole thing. :p

 good to know

I was a little bummed by seeing that B after all this talk about stepping.

Actual model number of the Q6600:

BX80562Q6600

If it means anything at all, I would guess it means "boxed item" or "boxed unit." I'm just guessing here, though. ;)
Yeah, that's what Fry's uses internally. Bx = boxed. They sometimes print it on the yellow sales signs in store too.

It seems the difference is actually bigger than that review leads you to believe, though. I don't have another review to quote to back that up, but if I remember their G0 maxed out at about 3.3 didn't it? Most people are able to do a lot better than that.

Mine won't even reach 3.3GHz stable. 3.2 is my max stable speed. So reaching 3.3GHz is or more is by no means gauranteed. Obviously there are some differences between G0 and B3, but certainly not enough to consider it a completely different product as the OP suggested.

OK, I received my Q6600 this morning and it matches what bicycle_wreck has in his pictures.

S-Spec: SLACR
FPO/Batch#: L747B274
Pack Date: 03/19/08

Waiting on HDD and some time to put the new 'puter together...:D

Just ordered one. I'd be happy with 3.0GHz, considering I have an Opteron 170 @ 2.0GHz here... Still, I hope I get a G0 SLACR.

I installed mine on Saturday. I was going to overclock it, but I just don't feel the need. Its a beast. I may try 3.0GHZ a little later in the week when I have time to mess with it.

I received mine today also. A G0 SLACR just like the others mentioned earlier.

Now I have to wait for my other goodies to arrive from Newegg and Petras.

Kevin

Anyone get one from the B&M? If they're still on sale at the store, I'll go by tonight, but I'm not seeing that price on their site anymore.

Mine just arrived today, G0 stepping. Seems like Fry's did get rid of all their B3 stock at the end of march/early april.

lame I thought that frys was having another deal. I need some cheap quads.
