Hey [H]...

I was going to wait until next gen cards came out, but....since the 690's seem to be much more available now, I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on one. I game at 5760 x 1200. I would like to play bf3 at that resolution as well.

Would I have to upgrade anything else on my system to be able to do that? Are there better cards for that reso? Seems that AMD falls behind pretty significantly in the new gen of cards...Anything to suggest otherwise? I would be replacing a 5970, which gets wrecked by bf3....should I just wait for next gen?

System Specs:
X58 Evga SLI LE
920 @ 3.8 ghz
6gb Corsair 1600mhz ram
HIS Radeon 5970
1000w Silverstone PSU
3xDell U2410 monitors

other than the obvious fact that the gtx690 only has 2gb of ram per gpu, it should be good to go. considering your computer has room and power for it, I'd suggest you also look into the option of sli 4gb cards (gtx670/680), since you do plan on running surround resolutions. If you don't care about high levels of AA, the 690 will be great. But if you'd like to run 4x or higher, you're gonna want more vram.

Alright...so the extra 2gb of vram will be worth the extra 20o bucks in performance?

Yes it will be worth it. Since you will be running a larger resolution. At 5760 x 1200 the extra 2GB will be nice at that resolution for you. Thanks

I know you said nah to AMD but it seems like crossfire 7970s would kick ass for you and the VRAM would help.

Not to mention 12.7 is looking nice.

Go for a single GTX 690, next paycheck get another GTX 690. You can get a quad SLI with just 2 physical card instead of 4 physical card should you choose to go with GTX 680. Pros are better air flow, less noise. for the negative side i think its only the
price.[/url]

Still 2GB RAM, double/triple/quad 7970 or 4GB 670/680 at those resolutions.

Something 384 bit or higher. I think 256 bit was step back as well as 2gb but at least 4 gb in newer cards. I have 2 gtx 580 3 gb and I am going to wait.

It doesnt matter if it still 2GB ram. He's gaming at 5760 x 1200 resolution. All he need is raw GPU power. If you are owning GTX 580 now, you should wait for 780. But for now, he's still using a 5970 for triple screen, I dont think he can wait any longer.

Okay...So you guys think upgrading to a 690 now, is warranted because of my 5970 being so out of date, despite the lower memory bandwidth and 2gb of ram?

If so...I have a 5970 for sale.

If you can wait it out for 5 months do it. GTX 780 should be available early 2013, maybe a CES 2013 launch.

Or if you can wait out 10-12 months, the new generation will be here and much better.

Or if you can wait out another 24 months, the 890 will be out and this card will be old news.

QFT.

Buy what you want/need when you want/need it. No matter how long you wait and shop around, the instant you buy something, something newer, faster, better and cheaper will come out. If you wait 5 months for the GTX700's you might as well wait a few more months for the 8000 AMD cards but then you might as well wait a few more months for the GTX800 cards.........

"The Nvidia executives we talked with raised the possibility of a GK110-based GeForce being released this year only if necessary to counter some move by rival AMD. That almost certainly means that any GK110-based GeForce to hit the market in 2012 would come in extremely limited quantities. "

GTX 780 - 2880 sp ( or 2688 for yield reasons), 5 GPC, 15 SMX, 48 ROP, 384 bit memory bus, 3 GB GDDR5.
Those are pretty impressive specs. GTX 780 is due for a Q4 launch for Tesla and maybe late Q4 2012 or early Q1 2013 launch for Geforce. The next gen after that, GTX 800 series will be on 20nm in Q1 2014. GTX 780 will sell in the USD 550 price range. When this chip launches the GTX 680 will take its place as the mid range chip , GTX 760 Ti selling for USD 300 and the GTX 670 will sell for USD 250 as the GTX 760. Which means in 6 months time you can get GTX 760 SLI for USD 500. So if the OP can wait he will save USD 500. Its upto him whether its worth the wait.
