I have yet to see a detailed account of anyone dealing with Puget Custom Computers (AKA Puget Systems) from start (consultation) to finish (final build product) so I'm going to do my best to attempt it. Its a little long already, but when its all over Ill think about adding cliff notes.
My dad was in the market for a new PC. He hasnt really outgrown the Socket A Shuttle SN45G I built him back in the day but he had some money to burn and who am I to argue with the chance to spec a new machine. This time I wouldnt be the one handling the build. I know I can do it cheaper and maybe faster as well, but taking responsibility of the build would mean that Im also the tech support and this time around I did not want that.
I am a very cautious consumer and like to spend my money as wisely as possible to get the most for my dollar. I looked first to Dell due to their size and stability but It didnt take me long to write them off due to their limitations on customization and some not so favorable reviews on some of the more recent XPS systems. This resulted in many hours of scouring this forum to read reviews of the various leading boutiques in order to determine which I would feel best spending a couple grand with. Additional hours were spent researching hardware, configuring and reconfiguring.
I narrowed it down to Puget and Maingear and shot off an email to each giving them an idea of what this new PC would be used for and how much I was looking to spend. I targeted $2,000 with a max of $2,500.
I received a response next day from Giovanni at Maingear. His reply suggested I give him a call to configure something over the phone. I was not interested in calling yet nor did I have much time to do so especially considering the 3 hour time difference (CA to NJ). Maingear went on the back burner.
Two days passed and I had yet to hear anything from Puget. I found this odd after reading about them on the forum so I shot Heather a PM. She replied same day and suggested I forward my original email directly to Perry. I did so and he replied next day with a detailed response listing a preliminary build that explained his reasons behind his choice for each piece of hardware. He also had it entered into their online configuration so I could click on and read about each item. This is the kind of response I was looking for.
After this initial reply from Perry and a couple more emails back and forth with additional questions and answers I was set on Puget. I spent the next couple days reading up on more hardware while thinking about Perrys recommendations and nitpicking every single choice I made on their configuration system. Ultimately, I strayed away from many of Perrys suggestions but came up with a system I knew would be way faster than my dad would need but that would make him very happy and keep him that way for a while to come.

UPDATE ON BUILD STATUS INDICATING AVAILABILITY OF PARTS REQUESTED
Most every part I requested was in stock or is scheduled to arrive at Pugets location this week with the exception of the video card (the only item I chose that is not one of their favorites). I also managed to stay very close to my $2,000 target and stayed under $2,500. That was nice to see considering I added in the Reaper RAM and that not so $/GB friendly Velociraptor.
I will keep this thread updated as I get more info on the build status, shipping and of course delivery and unpacking. Feel free to ask questions if I left something out and thanks for reading if you got through all of that.
