I need to setup a new domain soon. In the past I have always used the .local TLD for domains. I've been reading up on how Office 365 and Active Directory integration requires the domain to have a public, top-level domain TLD.

I am curious if there are other things I need to consider beside that before deciding what to use. Is it difficult to migrate from local to public TLD if we choose to do so at a later time?

You can do a massive UPN switch. Depending on legacy systems that might or might not be a massive undertaking.

As has been touched upon, you can add a UPN suffix ( to match your public domain ) to any domain you have.

So name your domain whatever you wish, it doesn't really impact your possibilities.
