PSU wattage requirement

I'm building a new PC with i7-12700k and my EVGA 3080. According to several PSU calculators, my new system will require 810w - 820w. Would an 850w PSU like the Seasonic SSR-850TR be sufficient or should I spend the extra $70-ish and grab the 1000w version? My 750w Seasonic has been a smooth operator for the 3+ years it's powered my current build.

go with 1kw and not have to worry(shouldnt). lots around here having issues tripping ocp on 850w only know of one with issues on 1kw.
 
Yes Def always go with a bigger psu than required. It gives the ability to upgrade and a safe zone. Also do some research some higher watt psu"s give better efficiency than a lower watt one.
 
I ran my 3200g and 3080 on a 650w EVGA PSU and never had an issue. I completely forgot that was the psu in the system until this thread haha
 
Does that 12700k really suck up that much power?
I am running a 5800X and 3080 with 750 and my power from the wall never hits 500 watts, max was 460 or so playing BF2042 Beta.
I've got 2x SSD's, 4x HDD's, and 2x NVME drives in the system as well.

Here's my build and the wattage calculated. I had to improvise on the RAM because the choices don't include DDR5. I plan on running with 32GB DDR5, not 256GB DDR4. I figured it best to overestimate. I don't have a sound card, but will have a 7-port USB 3.0 card.

Putting that ram adds almost 100 watts to the recommended PSU.
The calc shows 639 load wattage and 689 recommended PSU for my setup. I have utilization set to 24/7 since I don't turn it off.
Not sure why Setting the Computer Utilization from 1 to 24 hours would change the Load Wattage. The Load doesn't get higher with the PC just being on longer.

As I wrote, tha calculator doesn't offer DDR5 so I intentionally overestimated with my RAM choice. I have no idea what wattage is needed for 32GB DDR5. If I find a calculator with it as an option, I'll update my results.
 
I've seen factory reference RTX 3090's pull upwards of 377w or more by themselves. That's damn near half an 850w PSU right there. You also don't want to run a power supply at more than 85% of its total output all the time like that.

He is using a 3080. Uses a bit less than a 3090.
 
I've never done power testing on a 3080. I've only ever had 3090's and a 3080 Ti on my test bench.
What is the max you have seen with the 3080Ti? I have an FE model with a 5900X that I plan on moving to a new case with an 850 watt PSU.
 
I seem to recall the 3080 can pull 350-ish watts peak. Add 250 peak for the CPU and 150-200 for the rest of it (being kind of generous), and you're pushing 800+ watts.

Now, that's peak, and you're unlikely to max everything out all at once. Most people could probably get away with 850w. I think your existing 750w PSU would struggle under max load, and if you're going to replace it you might as well allow a reasonable amount of headroom. So I would agree with buying the 1kw PSU. With a less power hungry CPU I might be comfortable with 850w.
