Is Anthem just a Destiny clone? How bad are its technical issues? Will it be the end of BioWare? EA’s Open Demo weekend is ongoing for the PC, Xbox, and PS4, so curious gamers can get these answers on their own. Those who are interested should download it now (44GB of space on PC) rather than later, however, as the event will end tomorrow at 6pm PT/9pm ET. PC Gamer claims Anthem is “still buggy as hell.”

...things are going much better for Anthem's public demo. Despite opening the floodgates to everyone, there's been little noise about the connection issues we saw last week. I've been able to log-in and load into Fort Tarsis without issue, though bugs are still everywhere. No, I'm not talking about the brainy, explodey bugs you kill approximately 1000 of in the Stronghold mission, I'm talking about getting booted back to Fort Tarsis during a respawn loading screen. Twice. I still haven't been able to complete the damn thing.

It's actually really fun.

There are some issues with gaming sessions but the demo is a months old version of the game. One thing they don't have but say they're looking at is adding a FOV slider. Why they didn't have that in their development is beyond me....\

Oh and text chat..

I've enjoyed it. Yes, it's buggy, and I have concerns about the "well, the demo is months old" explanation. Okay, so you're purposefully showing something months old and full of bugs as the public face of the game. That's on you. Don't blame people for saying it is full of bugs, because it is. We have no data that indicates the retail launch is better yet. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.

But, the core is actually fun IMO - assuming the bugs get stomped down.

I'm gonna pass.

Had enough Desinty for one lifetime.

I hear ya, but (bugs aside), so far it seems like what Destiny 2 was trying to be but didn't really nail.

There was some game in the 90s or maybe early 2000s which escapes me - it was "jetpacks / armor against bugs". It was super fun, and Anthem actually reminds me of that fun gameplay.

Dammit, I wish I could remember what that game was. HELP ME [H]ardfolks. Anyway, this is like that, but modern. So far.

The UI console port thing hurts on PC, but the thing that absolutely kills it for me are the loading screens. All over the place, even in missions, loading screens.

Game wasn't bad... but definitely not a Day 1 purchase. Maybe once they get some bugs and quirks worked out and I catch it on sale.

This game plays more like Warframe than Destiny.

Outwars

I got it with my 2060, runs fairly well but reflections really spread the legs and give it a good old kick in the junk. But overall it's quite entertaining :)

Anyone run it on a 2070/2080 in 1440p ? How's the performance?

Reminds me of an Iron Man simulator almost with the flight style.

Earth Defense Force is like that. Really fun with friends too once you have the nukes.

so much drama with these upcoming games- Metro Exodus and Anthem...I'm really enjoying the Anthem beta and plan on getting the final game...hopefully they add more content

it ran great for me i didnt have a single problem on my rig i played about 7 hours straight yesterday switching between all 4 javs and whatnot, never once had a crash

Didn't care for it. Felt lifeless, soulless. The complexity level was wanting and felt like there was very little depth to the gameplay. i got bored of the gameplay loop in alpha and not much has changed since then. It feels more like a shoot 'em up game with a bit of flying, Warframe already does that for me so I'll just stick to that should I want that experience. Otherwise, the tactical layering of The Division 2 will keep me busy. My opinion, for whatever that is wroth.

That name brings back so many memories.

Loved the independent torso and 3D verticality.

One of the missions that I still recall fondly was the one where you're fighting through a ship that crashed landed vertically, so everything was "on its side".

I have Access premiere so I'll put the months old build statement to the test when it comes out. If its true, I hope to get some good value out of the game. If it's not, I don't have time for a dev team that started out with lies right before a game launch.

I haven't had a single frostbite engine based game work well from the onset. I FINALLY got BF V to run well on a newly formatted system with 2x 2080ti's and just installed the Anthem Demo and I cant stop crashing to desktop at random times.... this is almost as fresh an install as you can get...

Couldn't turn off motion blur in it. Don't need until tomorrow to decide it's a [H] pass.

Anthem doesn't have any RTX features yet.

I have a 1080, so similar performance to the 2070. Frame rate is generally above 30FPS in 1440p on Ultra. I tried running at 4K but it was dropping below 30 too much to be comfortable to play. Adjusting the settings didn't make much difference in performance.

I noticed similar performance and lack of fps increase with settings tweaks on my 1080 ti. 4k was unplayable but 1440 was smooth for the most part.

It was fun. Destiney with a story, so we will see how that pans out. I have stopped pre-ordering things, so I will wait until fan reactions and reviews are out.

I'd guess that 80% of people playing the demo are getting-off on the Iron Man element. So you put jetpacks in any other open world game and you've basically got this game, right?

To some extent yes, but it helps that the graphics are pretty good too. I haven't played any of the Destiny(s), WOW, Warframe etc, but I was a huge fan of the Crysis games. I guess that's kind of the same thing as the Iron man element. I'm just hoping the suits are customizable enough to create a different game play experience depending on your loadout.

Demo was fun. There are more bugs than I would like to see for a game that's supposed to launch in a few days. Won't be a launch day purchase for me unless a few friends pick it up.

firefall is somewhat like it tho, more cartoonish. but they had to close down, it was prety good and fun early on but.

i didnt have any bugs apear for me but i played like 2 hrs. it just feels like mass effect andromeda without a story.

Is there any point in me getting this if I just want to play solo?

I'd assume so for the real game. For "missions" (story content) you can make them private and just enjoy it yourself. The "freeplay" (world activities) forces the setting to public, but that also doesn't really matter a lot. It's like a very lightly populated MMO at that point (4 people in the world, hah). Many folks just go doing their own things.

Some stuff does require others like "strongholds" which are like mini-raids. Requires 4 people.

I'm with you, I normally like to play by myself as an escape from people for a while. But it's pretty mild in forcing you to play with others if you don't want to. It looks like there's a reasonable balance here of things to do by yourself vs groups. Strikes me of similar lines The Division took, except without forced PvP for good stuff.

Destiny killer. Mark my words. The combat is even more polished. People are shitting over one of the first few games that lets you fly around like Iron-Man on steroids?

Ungrateful fucks.

The flying around is fun, it makes me want Crackdown 3 to not suck.

I think the game ran horribly. Getting a locked 60 at 4k is out of the question. If the game looked good, I'd be okay with that, but it looks kind of rough. It almost looks like there is a shadow setting or reflection setting missing as the water reflection is very poor.

Sadly no. It is possible to play by yourself but the missions aren't designed for it. Bullet sponge bosses with perfect aim and relentless fire combined with infinite re-spawning minions. You really need more people to divide the attention up so that somebody has a chance to get in some good hits in while one of your team draws fire. I tried to solo one of the missions in the demo but tended to run out of ammo or patience.

Nope. Not even a sale buy. It is a co-op game. By the time it is cheap enough to try. Nobody will be playing it. Die ea. Die.

Arguably, the biggest Destiny killer was Destiny 2.

Well that sucks...guess I will move that money to another game then...thanks!

Yeah, that Armor/Suit element that is sort of like an expansion of the Gun-Porn rule of FPS's and a game like, say, The Division.........

BioWare needs to go back to making really good single player games. That's what made them awesome. EA is ruining a once proud company.

Does Anthem look nice? Yes. Did the story seem...compelling? Meh. Was it extremely buggy? Yep. Do I want to play online/multiplayer with other people when I'm trying to play a game with a story? NOPE. I'll pass, thanks. I'll just wait for the next Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
