PS3 upscaling DVDs but not Blu Ray extras

I have 60gig fat PS3.

It up-scales DVDs to 1080p just fine

It outputs blurays at 1080p24 just fine

But ...

When I view extras off a bluray disk that are in standard def (480p) it outputs in 480p.

I can't seem to find a setting that changes this, I've googled but find nothing but people talking about upscaling regular DVDs.

It's very annoying because my samsung TV sometimes doesn't follow the PS3 when it changes to outputting in a SD format so I have to switch inputs in order for it to re-synch.
 
From what I understand, upscaling is only for DVD's, not bluray.

That's pretty lame. Does anybody know of a player that can upscale SD material being played off a blu ray disk?
