I just got my 40gig PS3. I was hoping to use it for Seti@home or folding@home. I am disapointed. The thing sounds like a airplane, and gets super hot. Can someone confirm if this guy is 65nm or not.
Thanks

your PS3 shouldn't sound like an Airplane, 65nm or not.

the air coming out of it should be hot. the PS3 innards has a large heatsink setup that covers a lot of area. it expels its heat very well and the PS3 is very hardy as far as working in warm environments.

I have a 60gb, and it is very quite. definitely quieter than a 360, and quiter than my computer that i built with pretty quiet coolers. I'd take a shot at exchanging it. hopefully you bought it from a place that has good return policies.

I really can't hear my PS3 at all. Either I'm going deaf (quite possible) or there's an issue with your box.

My PS3 is a 60gb launch console and it makes a whining noise when I fold. I think folding puts more work on the cell then any game. I wouldn't call it an airplane though.

I also have a 60G from Dec 06' and have the same sound coming from when I fold. When I play games, movies, or music my PS3 doesn't really make any noise, but when I fold@home I hear a high pitch noise (very faint) and it does run pretty hot. Doesn't sound like an airplane though.

My PS3 is extremely quiet, even when im running F@H i forget its on unless i look at the green light.

They do run hot by design. That just means its doing its job getting the heat out.

If yours sounds like an airplane, something is screwy.

From what I gather, based on the people that post about it, most PS3s don't make much noise at all but every once in a while someone gets a loud one. Maybe its just a bad fan or different fan manufacturer. Mine (original 60GB) is pretty quiet.

folding at home looses a lot of value when you start paying the electric bills.

The original PS3 uses right under 300 watts at full tilt.

300watts of electricity 24/7 will cost you about $30 a month from the power company.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather see my $30 dollar a month go to something I deem more valuable, local charity, church, bum I encounter, whatever.

Mine is quite. I have had an 360 before, that thing was way louder. I would really have to try in order to hear my PS3, it's that awesome.
Buying a console for folding? lol
$400 + $30/mo? I guess you really love thy research :)

But isn't folding kind of like charity? Its for a project at Stanford, where they are researching protein folding. So that means you are contributing to medical science. That doesn't sound too bad.

mine is very quiet until the temp hit a certain point. Unfortunately you are trying to fold@home and this runns your processor at 100% 24/7 so it is always going to be at high temps. You may want to try moving the PS3 to a much cooler room when you just want to fold with it since technically you are not playing games on it at those times. the cooler the outside temp is the less the fans will have to work to get the heat out and then they will run much quieter

Yes the 40gb are 65nm. To begin with PS3 used a bit more power than X360, but with the redesign it's dropped significantly. I'm not sure how much power Falcon saved. Although I've read there are two versions of the 40gb PS3. One with a 17 fan blade and one with a 19 fan blade. One is noticeably quieter. I don't know. I have a 60gb that is very quiet, you can barely hear it. I was at my sister's playing Rock Band on their X360 and that sucker is loud ! FX5800 Ultra on steroids.

60gb here and like everyone else mine is quiet EXCEPT for prolonged use due to it being in an enclosed area, the fans kick on. Doesn't bother me at all because at that point it sounds like my 360 :p Now, if it was out in an open environment with more area to breath then I may have an issue with it. Also, when the fans kick on I call it stage 1. They are on and you can tell. Before when there were glass doors on my tv stand and my roommate would close it, stage 2 would initiat and that thing would fricking roar

Fans kick in at the power on for me and then they quite down to 0 noise. When they do start, I can barely hear it from close distance, and when they slow down, barely any noise at all. With sound off I can hear HDD working sometimes, but that's about it. I have 40gb version btw.

I had a launch 60gig unit that was extremely quiet. Sold it in January so I can't comment on it past then.

Mine runs super quiet when doing anything (folding, games) and it runs just fine/normal for temps. I have a summer 07 60gb model.

I have the 40 gig version and I left it on over night to fold and I probably heard more of the hard drive than the fans.

My room is small. Even when playing a DVD at a lower volume I can the hear the fan. I plan to return it to Dell. These things are good for people with bigger rooms and that play sound loud.
Thanks for all the help.

You must have got a dud because mine is whisper quiet. I cannot hear anything no matter how close I am when I first turn it on. If I play for more than an hour or so then I can sometimes hear the fans kick on, but it is extremely quiet when comparing it to my 360 DVD drive (which is loud, but not unbearable). I do currently own an 80gb version though.

I have a strong feeling the 80gb version may be quitter then the 40gb since it uses copper heatsinks.
Thanks

Well, it could be, but beside the point.
Even if I have a PS3 in a small room and sit right next to it with sound off and play DVD, I can barely hear it, BARELY. Seriously, I have been dealing with Dell for a bit now, and they do fuck up quite often.
