I have an Aspire ATX-AS520W which I got from newegg but I've been reading up on it and it turns out that it doesn't conform to the ATX spec and I'm pretty hesitant to use it now. No idea what to do with it , but that's kind of beside the point. (Anyone want it? $40+shipping and it's yours! heh.)

I'll be using an Opteron 165 (2x1MB L2, socket 939) in an Abit AN8-SLI board with 2x1GB and 2x 512MB of RAM (total 3GB) and a 256MB XFX 7800 GTX video card. I also have two hard drives (80GB, 250GB) and a DVD-RW. I am planning to add another 160GB drive in the future. I will not be overclocking this system as stability is more important to me at this point than speed.

What is a good power supply for my needs? I am thinking I need at least a 500W unit, but I don't need any real bells or whistles to go with it. Am I incorrect? Is 500W overkill? Would 450W or 480W do it with a little room to spare so I can add that third hard drive in the future?

I don't want to spend more than $150, ideally not more than $100. I just spent twice what I thought I was going to spend on a video card. (whoops!) But like I say, stability is important to me, so I want a power supply that will handle full load well and I'm willing to go up to $150 to get it.

I've been eyeing the Antec NeoPower 480W because it costs about $100. What do you think? Do you have other suggestions?

Or the Neo HE 500w (although the first batch apparently has problems), then there's the Antec SP 2.0s 450/500w (450w/Sonata II case for $99-20MIR @ mwave thru 12/31) models in the $60-75 range. Also the OCZ Power Stream 470 or 520w model available for $100-125ish. The Sunbeam NUUO 550w is apparently a good PSU, avail. for around $75. Meridian/XClio [CWT made] 450/480/550(?)w units available @ $50/$65/$75 respectively. And finally, Forton's 450w AX450-PN @ appx. $50 too, all of these PSUs on the [H]ard approved list. I'm sure there's more, but these all seem to be the most popular PSUs making the rounds in these parts right now.

I don't see why you would have a problem running your system (+extra HD) with even one of the 450w models I mentioned, but perhaps one of the PSU gurus could chime in on it - they would certainly be more capable/reliable than your Aspire unit though.

[edit] Antec TP 2.0 550w @ the Egg for $96/$86 MIR (free ship atm) too.
