I have just recieved an email from NCIX with the Canadian price drop.

the prices are amazing. EVERY/B] CPU is under $200!!! :eek: :eek:

Why would you want them? The current 90nm F3s overclock higher and more consistently than any of the 65nm chips to date.

I'm sure AMD is putting their 65nm resources into the production and development of Barcelona and its derivatives, rather than increasing the speeds of its K8 processors.
 
Nice can't wait to see what AMD's price drops is in the official AMD price charts tomorrow.

AMD isn't releasing a desktop K10 until Q4'07 or Q1'08. 65nm X2 chips would be cheaper to manufacture than 90nm X2 chips for their desktop line through that time. If AMD is constrained by 65nm resources now for lower end X2s and Barcelona, they're in huge trouble this fall (I don't think that is the problem). ;)

The 90nm process is far more mature than the current 65nm process. I'm guessing here (I feel the need to preface my statement with this because so many people just type bullshit as though it were truth) but because AMD has far fewer resources than its competition, it would make sense that they would be focusing what they have on the production of their next processor.

Presumably AMD knows far more about how much it's costing them to produce 90nm chips while working on production of their 65nm K10 derivatives versus producing more 65nm K8 chips and ignoring their 90nm resources.
 
Naw, fingers are pointing to AMD having problems with 65nm.

1) Bread and butter chips are not being moved to 65nm (cheaper to produce), and the chips that have been moved are not scaling.
2) Turion 65nm <-- LOL
3) Poor scaling on the K10 (65nm)

I see a pattern. ;) Of course AMD will solve each of those problems, but it's not reasonable to ignore it. I'm just acknowledging the large elephant in the room.

As far as I'm aware, it costs quite a lot of $$$ to outfit a facility to produce a different process. We'll see what happens.

As for the price drops, that rules! Some friends & myself are looking to put together some systems that are semi-budget and while we were going to use AMD before, this is a nice added bonus :D
 
It's a good time to build.

All these cheap dual core processors and these cheap ram prices. I might just build another system for the family.

these prices are really attractive.
I just built me 3800+ X2 in january. im pretty sure ill be making the move to 5600+ right away.

Just kidding. I suppose $65 is low enough for a processor with F3 stepping :p
 
I bet the current strong Canadian dollar is the reason the prices are so low. I'm Canadian so I follow the dollar a lot and pay attention to things. When it's low, the US buys a lot of our stuff so our jobs are safe and secure (ones that involve exporting to the states, I mean). But when it's high like it is now we can nab CPUs and other American products for dirt cheap prices! I paid half what I did for an Athlon XP 2600+ a few years ago on the new Athlon 64 X2 3800+ I just upgraded to. ^_^
 
I bought a 5200 before Xmas and paid about $400 for the damn thing, I'm waiting for the price drop so I can pick up the 6000 at a good price which will balance the prices out and make me feel better :D

That's interesting, the 3600+ and 3800+ aren't listed in this chart but this make sense, as if those received any further price drops then they will fall below the Celeron 4xx sequence processor from Intel and I don't think AMD is willing to sell for that low a cost.

On the 65nm, for the moment the 65nm process just doesn't seem to be clocking higher then the mature 90nm process, which is fine as the 4000+ - 5000+ represents likely the majority of AMD's sales now as their average selling price is in this range.

Let's just hope AMD can survive selling at this level of pricing though, and come back competitive with the K10 and it's derivatives in Q4 2007/Q1 2008.
 
Yeah it seems these prices (on the DailyTech article) are the slightly lower distributer ones, so the prices that will appear on AMD's website will be marginally higher then this.

So overall your looking at maybe $72 - 180USD at the most. So AMD's lineup will only be competing up to Intel's $183USD price point. So the highest competitor AMD will have to deal with is the E6750 at $183 on July 22nd. Which is just about right, so anything $200 or higher is effectively Intel only. This is of course ignoring the FX Series, which doesn't seem to be receiving any price cuts whatsoever.

So going by preliminary estimates the competitive landscape will be about this factoring in (July 22nd):

Athlon 64x2 4000+ vs Pentium Dual-Core E2140
Athlon 64x2 4200+ vs Pentium Dual-Core E2160

Athlon 64x2 4800+ vs Core 2 Duo E4400
Athlon 64x2 5200+ vs Core 2 Duo E4500

Athlon 64x2 5600+ vs Core 2 Duo E6550
Athlon 64x2 6000+ vs Core 2 Duo E6750

AMD has a better chance at some other price points like E6550 vs 5600+ and E2140 vs 4000+.

Read the counter blogs for some more level headed discussion such as Roborat64 and Sharikou 180, at least they feel more reasonable then Sharikou and Scientia. :D

As well of interest is Geroge Ou slamming AMD for their "simulated" 2.6GHZ Barcelona scores.

6000+ is approximately equal to an E6600 at stock. These are some cheap processors...
;) The E6750 (2.66GHz, 1.33GHz FSB) is Intel's nearest priced competition to the 6000+ as pointed out above.
 
Between the x2 5200, 5600, and 6000 - which one is the best overclocker?

Looks like newegg has the 5200 at 130. Seems like an awesome price point.

If you get the F3 stepping 5200+ (i.e. the one through that link, not the other model on newegg), that would be the best value overclocker. It will max out at the same level the other two will.
 
This just blows my mind! I paid $700 for my 939 4800x2 (when it first came out). This price war is insane!

$700 would correlate to the price the 4800+ S939 was in Jan 2006, pretty incredible the amount prices have come down since then with only 1.5 years have past. A 4800+ is now $115, simply amazing. :D
 
and my 3800 x2 was 400 bucks :/ (385 before shipping etc..)

lol, i payed 299 for my x2 3800 15 months back, and the thing wouldnt OC worth a crap, i payed 109 for my current e4300 3 months back, and it hammers the X2 into the ground

its been a fast year in terms of price/performance

too bad the x2 3600 will dissapear though, i mean a 4000+ at ~70 is great and all, but a 3600 at ~50 would have essentially killed off Intels single core celerons, not to mention become even more of a kickass deal

No competition and unwillingness to sell below a certain point, Intel and AMD are both saying ~75 is the absolute lowest they are willing to go on Dual Core, before they have to pull them off the market entirely.

Intel kinda does this too, like you won't find E6xxx sequence processors for any less then $163, or for this case E21xx processors lower then $74.
