Nice link. I remember when he said that. And, I thought the first time I saw over 1M memory, I was shocked.
 
What that "quote" actually shows is that people need to be more critical regarding their sources for information.

I think he's referring to the validity of that quote, which nobody's quite willing to give a good citation on.

That said, the sentiment stands,
  • X86 has gone as far as it can, we need a new architecture to continue moores law
  • a 32 bit address space aught to be enough for the IP stack
  • a 48 bit address space aught to be enough for the MAC stack
  • JavaScript as an interpreted language cant possibly become the dominant UI framework
  • Fortran is a dead language the language ones can go on for quite a while

I don't think gates or anybody can really be faulted for occasionally missing the often exponential nature of technology.
