A friend of mine gave me his Gaming PC & I have a question about the Power Supply. I actually hates PC gaming so he just gave it to me and bought himself a PS4. everything in this PC is about 4 months old & I have all receipts & warranty papers also

i7 3770

P8H61-M PRO Micro ATX

Adata 16 GB DDR 1600

EVGA 660 Ti superclocked 2GB

Samsung 840 EVO 120GB SSD

Toshiba 1TB HDD

DVD burner + Bluray Burner

Ok here is what im asking. the Power Supply he has in this is a "ThermalTake TR2 600 (TR600) (303666) which im told is made by CWT. But this PSU holds no certifications such as bronze, gold etc.

Should I be worried as we speak & If i upgrade my GPU to lets say a 780 should this be replaced?

It could be CWT, it could also be HEC. If it's an HEC unit, run the fuck away as quickly as possible.

The CWT should be fine, a bit mediocre, but fine.

Personally if I were given a build with that PSU I would either replace it outright or take the cover off and look at the board to see if it mentions an OEM and/or take a picture of the internals and replace it. Note: If you open it, don't touch anything other than the case itself or the wire bundle (if it gets dislodged). The UL comes up as Thermaltake which is odd...

If it's this I'd replace it http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_00002032.. no PFC on that unit is a telltale sign that it's garbage (and/or very old) and also likely quite inefficient.

All better power supplies with a similar cost. I don't trust anything Sirfa/Sirtec puts out.

Edit: Just did the math for your system and you shouldn't be pulling more then 300w at stock. Even OCed, I'd say you'll stay under 400w without watercooling. That should even be okay on the HEC version of the TR2. So I wouldn't rush to replace it. Wait until you see a bangin deal on something nice with high efficiency (Gold+) from a solid brand (Seasonic, CWT, or Superflower based units).

It will be fine no need to upgrade it unless you want to... All that 80 plus BS is marketing and this PSU has the same chance of failing as any other one. With that said if you do upgrade that Rosewill unit you mentioned is good. Also look at the Silverstone Strider series.

for now im going to have to run this PSU on the 660 ti until I can snag some funds here soon to replace the PSU. It was confirmed by tator tot over at jonnyguru that the PSU is a CWT build but is an old design and not very efficient

I'd just run that PSU until you can afford a new one. If it works don't replace it...

Yeah, its an old CWT PSH platform if I'm not mistaken. Not great, but better then the HEC model. Just run it till you can afford something decent / something decent goes on sale.

I planned on running it for at last 2 more weeks. Im going to look around on egg in the next 2 weeks to see whats on sale quality wise. I just got a Phantom full tower off a friend for 30.00. so the only thing im missing to complete this PC i got for free lol is a new PSU and more then likely a new video card

Not sure which yet or i may wait till the end of the year.

Seasonic or Corsair are two of the best out there for silver or bronze units.
I personally have a corsair HX750 that has been great since day one.
