Don't have a voltmeter, don't want to buy one

ghetto way = lick the +vdc and ground wires. Kinda lame zap = low voltage, more annoying zap = okay we're getting somewhere, DAMN zap = now we're talking, burn your tongue off = okay should've stayed away from the 120vac 15amp.

;):p:D

Did a little "modding" on the PSU in my Elite 100 HTPC

I replaced the case's noisy bundled PSU for more powerful but still noisy PSU I bought on impulse months earlier. So it was time for a fan swap, except the Scythe 40mm x 20mm fan I bought was a few millimeters too deep to fit. So I made it fit:

This upgraded PSU was also longer than the old PSU so it can't be attached to the standoffs that sit between it and the motherboard. This free dangling leaves it a little close to that green inductor for comfort; so it's wrapped in a highly insulating layer of parcel paper.

two 80mm fans installed on some very thin sheet metal.

Eventually had to remove electrical tape due to clearance issues.

This reminds me of the last time i'll ever open a PSU... something was rattling or making a whining noise, so I removed the case of the PSU, turned it on to try and locate the sound, started pushing things around to see if I could shut it up... then AHHAHHHH  flew backward and on both hands all my knuckles were blistered and bleeding...

You just found out, first hand, why they call it a flyback transformer :D

I hope you arent using that thing anymore... That silver thing just looks like a heatsink and it should have any kind of charge.

and you didn't bother to take photos of your knuckles that were blistered and bleeding?

I guess then it didn't happen :(

I threw it out ASAP... are you sure that's a heatsink? I'm not 100% thats the part that shocked me...

Silver thing is the heatsink. You can tell by the big fins to dissipate heat. You must have touched something else or pushed something else carrying power into the heatsink causing it to shock you.

Plugging in a power supply and then opening it up and poking and prodding in it is kind of dumb. It's like opening up a wood chipping and sticking your head into it while it's on to figure out what the problem is.

I convert old power supplies into 12v sources for RC racers. I had one unit open out of the case, plugged in and live. Was talking on the phone with a buddy, not paying particular attention and 'BAM!' it hit me. Only reason I was able to get off of it is I fell back in my chair. lol

Damn your lucky, could have been worse. My buddy had a close run in with a big ass cap that he was messing with and touched it to the mainboard and the half that touched blew into a bunch of pieces. I don't fuck with PSU's or CRT's because of the caps in them.

Wine corks holding my H100 radiator in the front of my case. The tightening down mechanisms for drive bays actually worked well to compress the corks even more, creating a snugger fit.

Roflmao, PSUs are nothing, that PSU that zapped you must have had issues, since as said that's a heatsink. I don't even know how many CRTs and PSUs I have opened and fooled with. One psu needed a fan, it later blew its cheap as heck caps in it so then I replaced the caps in it. Matter of fact, I have a Antec PSU here on the floor ripped open for sleeving. Not to mention my Corsair I sleeved.

Its called pay attention and be careful, hence the "No user serviceable parts" and "High Voltage inside" warnings.

Well I don't mess with them because I would rather not get shocked because I absolutely hate the feeling of electricity. Especially if it blows my knuckles open lol.

Unless it was just hot as hell, that shouldn't have hurt you.

For all of you stating, "that P.S.U. must have a problem" because its large heatsink carried a charge, larrymoencurly told me that large heatsinks in P.S.U.s are "often designed to be connected to high voltage (amazingly, that's for safety)."

There isn't any high voltage in the power supply. Simply converts 120VAC to 12VDC and less.

Often times transistors in PSUs or other circuits have the collector electrically connected to the package/case. The case is then also what is pressed against the heatsink to keep them cool. So you either insulate the transistors from the heatsink with mica sheets and plastic washers, or design the circuit so that it doesn't matter if the heatsink is carrying some juice. The mica actually creates another layer/barrier to heat transfer, so the "live" heatsink is cooling the transistors better than electrically insulating them.

Mmmmmmmmmmm Slot-2 Xeon retro-rig.....

Modified a set of brackets from a quad Slot-2 Xeon server to fit an Asus XG-DLS because none came with the board when I bought the thing off ebay. Wanted to ensure cooling on the Xeons, mounted a pair of fans using PCI slot covers to the hard drive cages. Was a pain to install, but totally worth it.

Glad to see this thread is still alive!

Here is my latest mod, a heatsink on a WRT54G.

Held in place with 3M exterior mounting tape, I don't think it's ever coming off.

Here it is, my getto mod of the year:

My computer chair has fallen into disrepair, more so that it is now a stool rather than a chair, and a very uncomfortable one at that:
http://i1358.photobucket.com/albums/q767/Taco_Island/PleasantGrove-20120930-00216_zps83d194d7.jpg
So, after removing the padding and an endless supply of staples that they used to keep it on:
http://i1358.photobucket.com/albums/q767/Taco_Island/PleasantGrove-20120930-00217_zps27ae71a8.jpg
And just for comfort, I decided to celebrate the 25th anniversary of my beloved Cadillac Brougham. By getting it ready to demo. But damn those seats are comfortable...
http://i1358.photobucket.com/albums/q767/Taco_Island/LarnedCity-20120930-00218_zpsdc541b67.jpg
So, after a bit of drilling and then thinking that some electric tilt action would be appealing, I got one hell of a seat that has lasted 25 years and will go a lot longer than some IKEA crap off of a wal-mart shelf and is a hell of a lot more comfortable. Just had to put the finishing touches on it with some scrap metal, spare UPS battery lying around and a neon tube for a laugh (not like the rest of it isnt) and I gots me a chair.

Tilt works, tube is working (its low enough to pick up footsteps at the moment, should drive the wife nuts), now need to go on to the next mod: charging the battery : )

That is the most amazing office chair I have ever laid eyes on. Excellent.

Very nice. Car seats are some of the most comfortable in the world IMO.

I think I am going to go back in and take off the casters though and spraypaint them gold, then this sucker will be rollin on daytons!

Thank you sir. I've just lost my shit at work. I love the battery to run all the adjustments. I kinda wish I still had my old ford probe seats. I used to just sit them on the floor for console gaming, but this would have worked SO well for them!

Awesome, pure awesome.

All I know is... that chair looks comfy.

I've got an old office chair that protests when anyone sits on it -- it drops several inches with a lovely sound that invokes the image of baked beans ;) Might have to do something with it if the piston can be fixed.
