I have an old cheapy 19" CRT monitor. Apparently, it doesn't tell the OS that it's capable of 1600x1200 via EDID or whatever.

on my old computer, running winXP pro, and an ATI video card, i was able to use a program called powerstrip to create a custom monitor driver and add 1600x1200 @ 60Hz, and worked like a charm.

In my new computer, with Win Vista, and nVidia 8800 GTS, the advanced options in powerstrip are disabled. I've tried numerous things, including setting the monitor driver to "Super VGA 1600x1200", but it still doesn't list 1600x1200 anywhere...

Yes, I've unchecked the box that says "Hide unsupported modes" or whatever..

Do you guys have any suggestions?
Thanks for ANY help!

Typically I've solved issues like this by just downloading the respective driver for the monitor - are you sure there isn't one available before you go pulling pins out of things?

search for nv_modes in the registry and replace the lines with the following, this is good for widescreen resolutions too. you will also have choices of 60/75/85/100hz. I have done it with all my vista installs. i run a 24" 16:10 CRT at 1440x900@100hz

Code:
{*}S 640x480=1;800x600 848x480 960x600 1024x768 1152x864 1280x800 1280x960 1280x1024 1440x900 1600x1000 1600x1024 1600x1200 1680x1050=20; 800x600 848x480 960x600 1024x768 1152x864 1280x800 1280x960 1280x1024 1440x900 1600x1000 1600x1024 1600x1200 1680x1050 1920x1200 1920x1440=10;

after you have done this, reboot and you will beable to choose 1600x1200 and 60-100hz
