my friend has RR Home, and after running a port scan on there IP address i find that almost every port is closed.

when i connect to the business VPN, im unable to ping any addresses inside, but from my work im able to ping and map drives.

so what ports do i need open from RR to get VPN to work from there house?

Are you planning on using PPTP or L2TP VPNs, each has its own set of ports needed.

At the most basic level PPTP needs port 1723 and *protocol* 47 open.

Open up TCP and UDP port 10000. That's what the Cisco (and, I believe, several other) client uses.

i plan on using PPTP

how do i open up "protocol" 47? open both UDP and TCP for port 47?

HMM. . .showed me. . . ;)

That depends on what equipment is between the client and vpn "server", most consumer level routers already have this built in.

Here is a Microsoft KB on the GRE protocol.
