Are you an out of work IT guy? Well, chances are you are going to use your computer skills and turn to a life of crime. You’ll no doubt steal from your former employer, commit identity theft and probably kick a dog / rob an old lady while you are at it. Good job you low life scumbag, you just had to pick an IT career…didn’t you?

The ever-weakening job market could well lead to an increase in online crime as laid-off workers, especially those with computer skills, turn to scams to support themselves, Cisco Systems Inc said in a mid-year security report to be released on Tuesday.

so my mother was right!!! she used to tell me: "Stay away from those IT guys, they are up to no good!!!!"

:p

How did you know Steve?

Well I've already kicked a dog, so that is off the list.

But seriously, it does suck out there right now for jobs... and I am trying anything to keep from turning to the "dark side."

(However, I cannot steal from my previous employer since they went under... Stupid Circuit City ::shakes fist::)

did they start to make trouble in your neighborhood?

oh yeah, hoodlums they were!!
peddling with floppies and some other arcane activities (D&D) in their parent's basement
and those pocket protectors and glasses were all just part of their secret society outfit

I do believe you missed the Prince of BelAir reference.

Oooh!!!!!!

"...Started making trouble in my neighbourhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said youre moving with your aunte and uncle in bel-a..."

lolz :p

There are exceptions, but the ones who are being laid off are generally the ones who are in it just for a check and wouldn't have a clue how to do "online crime". It's the top-tier admins and coders that know what they are doing who could do some damage. They are also the ones who could get away with it since they know the systems inside and out...

Reports are for jackasses to busy twittering to pay attention to whats going with their companies.

(yes you guessed it I'm one of the guys who has'd to write stupid reports with percentages and statistics.)

Typical ignorant jackass who hasn't lost his job yet...hope you are the next one to be H1-B'ed out of existence.

Have fun training your off-shored replacement when your boss realizes your overinflated paycheck can be reduced to nearly nothing by a team of 10 guys in Bombay.

Out of curiosity, does it feel awesome to assume that you still have a job because you are part of some elite workforce that isn't stupid enough to get laid off right now?

Holy shit dude, you have some serious anger issues. Don't blame him because at a guess, you picked a career path that could be out sourced.

did you even read the post I quoted, KingPariah, or do you think so highly of your cyber skills that you believe you are in the elite top end of IT workers who are capable of pulling off an online crime spree? I know I'm not, just agreeing that the people who are being laid off are not cyber criminal pedigree (they are developers and techs). if you believe you are some leet cyber ninja by all means, go nuts.

out of curiosity, have you been drinking or something?

I can tell you first hand that skill has nothing to do with keeping a job. A lot of quality talent is out there at the moment in this job market. It's all about who you know and who you piss off.

No, but there are many talented people who have a passion for what they do, who aren't "just in it for a check" as was so delicately stated. Re-read what was written and I am sure you will see how it isn't necessarily appropriate, given this job market.

The point is that being "cyber criminal pedigree" has nothing to do with being laid off. The post insinuated that people who haven't been laid off are more talented, or skilled, or a level above people who HAVE been laid off.

It ain't true. This job market is a massacre, everyone is being pulled into it.

I'd rephrase, myself, from experience:
Technical skill has absolutely no place in the current IT market whatsoever; incompetence is the requirement, along with brown nosing a manager who's just as incompetent.
I've refused four consulting gigs - REFUSED - because the existing staff not only demanded it be done exactly their way, but demanded it be done wrong and refuse to hear even the thought that they could be wrong. Their retort, all the same; who cares if it's wrong or breaks or takes everything down?

Even if these people must seek other ways to get a living, I don't really think it will increase online crime. There may be rare cases, as always, but nothing significant.
IT jobs seems to be somewhat unstable anyways...

Pretty much everything can be outsourced. Hell, I recently read about doctors performing laproscopic surgery long range via a network. Go ahead and tell me the HMOs aren't salivating at having all their doctors in India do the work here.

Haha.:D

Hmm, I wonder if all the journalists being fired form failing newspapers will increase the incidence of graffiti then?

I studied computer networking and got my A+ certification. I cannot start my career. All I can do is study and get more certfications and make myself more marketable for when the economy does get better. So I'll probably have to work my crappy retail job for another 6-12 months. the only field still hiring is nersing and medical. I've thought about studying radiology but I am too scared to take out a loan tha tI may not be able to pay back. I finished school studied hard.... Don't know about turning to crime but I may end up marrying your grandmas and pushing them down the stairs. Just a thought.:D

look at it this way, if you take out that loan, you get experience and if you REALLY can't pay it back...move to another country. they can't follow you over international borders.

that being said, I have had no issues getting job offers in this economy.

Umm, geez. Guess you need to re-read my original post. Read "there are exceptions" a few extra times. Since you seem to have taken offense from my comment to heart, you must not fit into the exception group. Either that, or you may need to freshen your reading skills up (which may also explain why you may not be employed). I wasn't pointing fingers at anybody, but you seemed to have raised your hand in the crowd to point yourself out. It was a generalized statement and not meant in the way you read it. Sorry about the misunderstanding. If anything, you should be upset about the person who created the presumption that the "poor it job market" would even increase crime. :p

THIS

Really good people are losing their jobs, whether due to being too high on the pay/benefit scale, their project being shut down, etc.

I've seen an increase in violent crime....in a 1.5 year period, my apartment complex went from nice to very dangerous. I've been escorting some of the people in my building to/from their cars...people have been getting mugged and worse here.

Sad part, this is normal for this area now.

So it's not an "OMG the IT guy has turned ebil!" problem, it's people who are so sure they'll not get a slice of the employment pie for a long time doing what they feel they have to do....I saw this in the city I grew up in as well, and honestly it's saddening to see this kind of desperation.

Hopefully the poo stops hitting the fan soon.
