1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you?
Yes. And fortunately, the time the hard drive itself died was after various times I had lost data so I managed to recover most of it from backup media.

2. Have you ever had a USB Pen fail on you? (if you've used these)
No

3. Have you ever had an external Hard Drive Fail on you? (if you've used these)
N/A - never had one.

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?
Yes. Mostly for the initially burn to fail, but they do fail after time.

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?
I've had it be unrecoverable and I've had it be recoverable, so whichever that goes for.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?
Yes. Files are rarred with a 10% recovery record as well as 1 in 5 recovery volumes. I also have a secondary hard drive I manually copy between (Not in a RAID; helps against accidental deletions), as well as 6-monthly backups to DVD media, one copy stored in a fire/water/gas/explosion/radiation-proof safe in my room (I got it for free, I had to use it :p ), another copy being stored at my brother's house, probably just lying in a drawer though. I've had one too many data losses that I now backup data obsessive-compulsively... speaking of which, it's about time for me to make my next backup. Must do that sometime this week.

am conducting a poll to use as data in a speech I am giving. Please answer the following questions. Only answer a question if it applies to you.

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you?

Yes. Many. Maxtor drives in particular, failing every few months only to be replaced under warranty

3. Have you ever had an external Hard Drive Fail on you? (if you've used these)

No. I have used my laptop's hard drive in a USB2/Firewire enclosure. I used it for a few months, it never failed.

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?

No, none that I ever cared about. I mean, I've left some out in the sun for a few years because I didn't care about them, I suppose they won't work. But no, none that I cared about.

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?

Yes. It is not easy to recover deleted files in modern Windows operating systems since they don't come with any undelete tools.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?

No, not really.

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you?

Not personally, but I work in a computer store, so I see millions of dead hard drives, they fail more than anything else in a computer, every brand you can think of.

2. Have you ever had a USB Pen fail on you?

One of mine died, but that drive was in use everyday. Compared to hdd's these are very very reliable though.

3. Have you ever had an external Hard Drive Fail on you?

Again, not personally, but we see quite a few that customers have dropped or otherwise abused that don't work anymore.

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?

Heaps, but only because of bad treatment

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?

Nothing important.

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?

raid 5 array for most stuff, and a raid 1 array for the important stuff. the important stuff is on both arrays.

1. Have you ever had a hard drive fail on you?
YES

2. Have you ever had a USB Pen fail on you? (if you've used these)
NO

3. Have you ever had an external Hard Drive Fail on you? (if you've used these)
NO*

4. Have you ever had a CD-R, DVD-R, or other optical media fail/corrupt on you?
YES

5. Have you ever deleted a file by accident and had it be unrecoverable?
NO

6. Do you have any sort of backup regimen?
YES

*the external drives i use and use at work are the same drives in the computers we use...so those drives have failed in the past but not specificly the ones we placed in the external enclosures.

Be interested in seeing what you come up with out of all this

Since I owned my first computer I´ve owned 5 hard drives :
1) a 500 MB drive
2) a 2 GB
3) a 10 GB
4) a 40 GB
5) and finally my current drive a 160 GB drive...

All MAXTOR, and none has ever failled on me... maxtor rules.... I still own the 10 GB drive and use it to move data around and I´ve never really taken too much care of it and it still runs perfectly after 5 years... like I said, Maxtor rules....

I´ve had optical media fail on me, but rarely, and I only backup my most important data, like work and software I write for class....
