I'm able to get 2 FC HBA's for around 20 EUR each:

  • 1x HP Storageworks Qlogic QLE-2460 (PCI-e)
  • 1x HP StorageworksQ-Logic QLA2460 (PCI-x but should work in PCI-e)

And a SFP-cable so I can connect them point-to-point.

I would use this to connect my NAS to my backup server (both use Linux). My question to you:

Is this a good deal?

Will this actually work?

Are you saturating your current link or is this just because i can type of purchase :p

Just a little project I'd like to do. It's either this or messing around with Dual/Quad NIC's + Linux bonding.

What do you mean with "PCI-x but should work in PCI-e"?
PCI-X and PCIe are not mechanically or electrically compatible.
PCI-X may work in legacy PCI, however.

FC does block level links, comparable to what iSCSI does.
You cannot get normal network traffic across that link.

If you think PCI-X will work in PCI-E, I don't think you're quite ready to play around with Fibre Channel.

you can't connect FC cards to a NAS.. doesn't work that way.

NAS = Network Attached Storage, FC = Fibre Channel.. 2 completely different topologies, with 2 wildly different hardware types.
