PNY 9600GSO 768MB / 96sp / 50.00 after 40mir

as far as i know, the 512mb 9600GSOs are the g92 based ones, with only 48sp. the 384 and 768 ones are the same as the corresponding 8800GSs, and should perform a good deal better than the g92 GSOs. I'd take a 8800GS/9600GSO nonG92 over a 256MB 8800GT, but a 512MB 8800GT is better.
 
And the 9600gso 384MB and 768MB are based on the G92 gpu which is just a renamed 8800GS.
 
But if you are not folding, i'd easily buy a 4830 over this for 15$ more and a much smaller rebate.
 
512MB/1GB 9600GSO cards are G94-based with 48SPs enabled.

gotcha, i got the G92 confused with G94, i think.

i'm just glad i dont need to research to buy a video card anytime soon
 
Sounds like there are several versions of the 9600GSO with varying GPU's and memory configs. Almost like a catchall for a bunch of their old parts. All of them are < 9600GT though right? At least at stock speeds?
 
Yes all of them are less than the 9600gt in speed but the 384 ddr3 of the 9600 gso is very close to speed of the 9600gt
 
I've been watching this for a couple weeks now.... price hasn't budged.

Been tempted to bite, then talk myself out of it.
But, every day I find myself debating again.

Is this really equiv. to an 8800 series? I couldn't find a 768Mb GSO version on any of the VGA charts.
 
They trade blows, but in most cases is marginally slower than the GT.

Shows that a higher memory interface (256 of the GT vs 192 of the GSO) and higher clocks are quite a major factor in performance despite less shader processors.
 
so, wait... you're saying the GSO w/ 768Mb is SLOWER than a 9600GT??

The g94 core is about 25% more efficient than the g92 core, computing about 25% more data than the equlivalent g92. 64*1.25=80 which is less than the 92 stream processors the 8800gs/9600 gso 384ddr3/768ddr2 has

Thus the gso has more shader power.

But the gso has a 192 bus with 384mb of ddr3 vs a 256 bus with 512 of ddr3 which the 9600 gt and 9800 gt has. Thus the 9600gt has more memory bandwidth.

Thus which one will perform better will depend on whether you need more shader power or memory bandwidth. Overall in most games the GT is a little bit faster than the gso.

Source? As far as I know, the G94 is basically the same design as G92 except with fewer components.

The 9600GT has about 25% less horsepower (measured in GFLOPS*) than the G80 based 8800GTS 640MB and still manages to beat it. The 9600GT also seems to have better memory bandwidth utilization. And the comparisons of the 8800GTX Ultra vs G92 based 9800GTX cards show the G92 being faster per clock than the old G80 Ultra.

* G80 8800GTS 640MB = 269GFLOPS, 64GB/s memory bandwidth
G94 9600GT 512MB = 208 GFLOPS, 57.6GB/s memory bandwidth

As far as G92 vs G94, no. Both are in the same generation and the G94 is a cut down G92, both using the same architecture. The performance/clock should be about the same, besides limitations the G94 will have due to less memory bandwidth.
 
nope I am wrong still but for a different reason. I completely misremember something I read in a review.

The G92 and G94 compared to the G80 are able to push more data through the memory bus due to better compression algorithims which are 15% more efficient under the best of situations. This has to do with bandwidth and not shader power. So completely completely wrong I was :D

(word of advice don't trust your memory when you are sick.)
