Left: 20" Dell 2001FP 1600x1200 4:3 ($50 on CL)
Center: 27" QNIX 2710 2560x1440 16:9 @ 110Hz ($300 here from another forum member)
Right 20" Dell 2001FP 1600x1200 4:3 ($50 on CL)

Here is my budget PLP setup. I was not so worried about PPI and size matching up. I will game on the center 110Hz monitor and use the side monitors for productivity. 4:3 monitors in portrait are easier to glance at.

Pros:
  • Low Price ($400)
  • Fantastic usability for multitasking with x1200 pixels
  • Minimal space required (45 inches from left to right)
  • Viewing angles (IPS)

Cons:
  • PPI doesn't match up
  • Power consumption is high on old monitors (2001fp = 90W max)
  • OEM 2001FP stands do not go down low enough
  • QNIX has better, brighter colors

As you know, many people use a 20" x 30" x 20" setup as they match up almost perfectly in PPI and height. I just can't see buying a 30" right now when you can find such amazing (and overclockable) 27" monitors.

I couldn't find anyone else that did this with a 27" so I did it myself. I have a very narrow (45" wide) cubby desk in my apartment and 3x27" would be impossible to fit. I would prefer to buy a triple mount monitor stand and put all three on it, but there is no way that would fit either.

After using for a while now, another con is the heat coming off the old monitors. Makes sense seeing as they have high power consumption, but it does get warm being that it is summer.
