Can someone recommend a few shoot them up action game that is not 1st person shooter. I have too many 1st person shooter game already. Like top down space craft attack game would be good.

Also, what are some good action strategy game like Super Mario 2 vs. Donkey Kong, Lode Runner etc.

I liked Shadowgrounds (sounds like what your discribing) retail and on Steam.

is over the shoulder fine too?

Well Max Payne 1 and 2 were really good 3rd person shooters. I did enjoy Splinter Cell 1-3. Not exactly recent...

I am kind of confused about the second request for an action strategy like the ones mentioned. Do you want Action, Strategy or a Platformer?

I bought Galaga, I really like it

I also bought max payne, it's only okay.

I had a few Win 98 based top down game, but they don't run on XP Pro. Raiden II comes to my mind, very good game for top down design. To this date, I am still looking for a replacement like Raiden II or Twin Cobra

Well strategy like a puzzle solving idea but action based, Lode Runner 1 & 2 is the best e.g.. The reason I like them so much is that I don't have time to play a long time, but it's nice to have a break. Loderunner 2 suits me just fine, as each game is a small puzzle, take me 15 to 20 min. to solve it, and once I finished, I can go back to work.

But as long as there is a save game feature, it's okay.

Hitman: Blood Money. It is simultaneously a third person shooter and strategy game packed into one.

I'm still having problems understanding what the OP is looking for. It says strategy, but it instead sounds like he wants a puzzle game... with platforming elements??

To me strategy = Command and Conquer, Starcraft etc. I was a little confused as well.

Well, Portal is a very popular puzzle style game but it is first person. Not really a shooter.

I was going to suggest Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Its third person / fixed camera with platforming jumping puzzles. I didn't play the sequels after that so I can't comment on the newer titles.

what's the difference btwn. Over The SHoulder vs First Person shooter?

Look up Lost Planet, Tombraider, Gears of War, and Resident Evil 4 for what I mean about over the shoulder. You can see your character but not through his/her eyes.

FPS is like Doom, Quake, Crysis and such.

While SORT of the same, they do feel different for some reason :)

Shadowgrounds though you are completely above the character always looking down (like you were in the clouds)

You are right. I should use the term "Puzzle solving" instead. Strategy is quite mis-leading, my screw up

I bought all those Prince of Persia series games, I even have the old one back in the 90's (the 2D ver. original one). Speaking of games like Prince of Persia, what did happen to those 3D fighting game like Virtua Figher 2?

I went to Sega.com, they are all gone as far as PC is concerned, I own Virtua Figher 2 and Virtual On, and Last Bronx. But since then, I don't see any more 3D fighting game.
