PlayStation 4 continues to be a solid product for Sony, beating the PlayStation 2 sales launch aligned is remarkable. I do not see the PlayStation 4 hitting the magic 99.99 MSRP price to beat PlayStation 2 lifetime sales driven by secondary markets though. The PlayStation 4 MSRP is still 299.99 for the PlayStation 4 slim.

Market analysts and Sony expect losses in 2020 and 2021 pending the PlayStation 5 launch with a return to profitability in 2022.

How so? Its never even a blip on their financials because they seem to be giving the chips away at cost, and the 100M PS4 users don't know/care which components are inside, not like there's AMD branding at bootup or anywhere.

Not saying you're wrong but I am failing to see how it translates meaningfully for them.

Yeah I don’t get that argument myself. Maybe (and that is a huge maybe) once the new systems come out with Ryzen 2/Navi parts we will see some sort of performance increase on the PC side but it’s never happened before.

They might see a boost to financials this time we will have to wait and see. I don’t think they would have the same contract knowing what they know now but who knows.
 
That's an amazing number, although I'm regretting purchasing the PS4 PRO, there hasn't been an exclusive I was interested in since Detroit BH, so my ps4 pro wasn't turned on in like 6 months now.

Pretty much, this is a win for Sony not AMD.

Saying its a win for AMD is like saying Apple selling 100m Iphones is a win for qualcomm because all their phones have qualcomm chips in it.

Heh, i bought the PS4 pro when it first launched and in the first week played uncharted 4 and beat it. It has been in use daily every since, but for netflix and HBO. Have legitamately not played any other game.. Coming up to 3 years of being used for purposes besides gaming ha...
 
Any idea why the Xbox isn't listed on this (the OG xbox do better and they didn't want to list it?)

As much as I was a huge fanboy of the Xbox back in the day, to include getting xbox live within weeks of it launching with mechasault, and playing Halo 2 for hours on end, the Xbox sold poorly and did not sell nearly as much as the other consoles.

I think this is largely due to the xbox not having an international presence and being mainly a US console, they had one for other markets/countires but games were extremely limited.
 
its a shame we can't compare with microsofts console sales since they don't publish numbers anymore. <--- bad sales....

still a huge win for AMD. i guess the future of consoles was fusion.
 
It will easily outsell both the PS1 and Wii. I wonder if it will beat the Gameboy series, which are at 118.69 million per Wikipedia.

Don't see it passing the PS2 which is at 155 million or the Nintendo DS which is at 154.
 
Pretty crazy. I guess I'll blame MS for really dropping the ball this generation. Better hardware (not counting the refreshes) and Sony's exclusives are way stronger then MS's. It's tough to justify the Xbox vs. the PS4 in most apples to apples comparisons. I bet I've played my Xbox One less than 20% of the time I've put into my PS4. With previous generations my consoles have been mostly at parity.

Actually, that is a win for Qualcomm as well. Yes, this is a win for AMD, as much as those around here do not like. Or, more to the point, if this were Nvidia in the console, others around here would probably be speaking about how bad of a loss this would be for AMD.
 
im happy for sony but looking at this from an industry perspective its just not that amazing. more people play games than ever... its not even a demographic anymore, every single male ages 6-60 plays some kind of video games. the difference i notice is that only the business/sales(dumb people) i know from work own and play consoles. in my family/friend circles only the smallest of children/babies own consoles. everyone else i know has a weak brow and is able to follow the most simple directions and assemble a rig for the premium experience. All the women i know just sit on their phones all day.

Its a PR win for AMD but not really a big financial one. They’re not making much money off of the consoles and the majority of console companies owners don’t know or care who is powering the system.

Could be that more are playing games, and therefore more are sharing consoles. Back in the day people also shared consoles, but it was more common that only 1 or 2 people would use them. I assume the amount of people per household has gone up, but unless they are very avid gamers they likely share the system between multiple members.

And we can apply the point to Nvidia in fairness as well: Sure there's a Tegra chip in the Nintendo Switch, but how many Switch owners give a shit about the fact? Next to zero.

That said, its still ultimately better than AMD have their hooks in the consoles than not -- clearly Lisa Su has some long game in mind that isn't obvious or evident to us mere mortals.
 
To those who said this isn't a win for AMD... When u have a product that every (major) console maker wants, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, that is a win. You are correct in they aren't (as far as I have seen) making much off of this, but the experience and global distribution they gain is huge. This also bod s sell for their branding even if the average Joe doesn't realize what's powdering their system, other companies notice that they can build a product that works and deliver on their promises.

The console makers don't "want" AMD. They have a line on a BOM they need filled by a processor for as cheaply as anyone will do it for them, they have no allegiance and don't care who it's made by.

It's not about the best processor for the job, it's about the cheapest. God DAMMIT!

To an extent. AMD still has to come through with a quality product or they wouldn't get the deal.

The bottom line is important, of course, but if the product is bunk no one would want it.
 
I've definitely spent more time on Playstation exclusives the past few years than I have on any other platform. They simply have the best single-player story/adventure based games and that's mostly what I'm into nowadays.

Xbone is redundant if you have a decent gaming PC already since it doesn't have any exclusives to warrant the console. So mine has mostly been played by the kids.

I would have agreed last gen, but this newest gen had a massive uptick in sales vs previous gen. More telling will be how the PS5 and new xbox perform, especially with full backwards compat.
 
If my ps4 wasn't just so damn sensitive to being powered off improperly lol.

The Jaguar cores were not good cores, everyone (to include me) were excited when AMD announced these a long time ago especially those of us looking for low voltage, ultra portable options back then. But good for AMD in getting a line of product that uses these, other wise they would of practically been a no show and AMD would of had nothing to show for it.

I get that, and that wasn't my point. My point was they came through for three major manufacturers, it instills confidence and the volume helps AMD with development, working out issues with silicon, and helping them get better negotiations with fabs where volume is king. Although, it's not like they could just get a Celeron with onboard graphics because it met their BOM target cost. They needed something that could fit their specific needs and AMD was able to do so. I'm sure they looked I to Intel and Nvidia for, at the time Intel had much better CPUs and Nvidia better GPUs, but they couldn't put together a complete package to meet requirements.

Actually, they do want AMD. Being both a high end CPU and GPU company, they are in a fairly unique position to deliver a complete product. You can't get that from Intel and Nvidia only has that for mobile (which is likely why Nintendo changed to Nvidia, for Switch). And I bet Nvidia's Tegra are relatively expensive, because the CPU portion is ARM which requires extra licensing money. I'm sure that Nintnedo would have liked to have stayed with AMD. They have been in Nintendo consoles since the Gamecube. But AMD doesn't yet have a suitable mobile product.

AMD may not make much money per unit. But they absolutely make money on the initial bids. And Sony has always been pretty bullish on semi custom stuff--- is pumping money for R&D. R&D with Sony is the reason AMD's APUs are so mature. Even Intel turned to AMD, for their most recent NUC product. Because they have a potent graphics package and the experience and means to integrate it into special products.

The PS is selling way better than the Xbox but the weird thing is that in the US, Xbox is more commonly used name for a game console.

Just we used to say Nintendo rather than Sega in the 80s and 90s.

Right, here in the US the sales are closer to 50/50. It's the rest of the world where Xbox sells at 30% or less.
 
So many damn good titles on PS4, not even worth trying to mention them all.

On top of this, have had some pretty fun times playing on it.

Well deserved achievement.

i think a lot of switch owners are happy with the tegra in their hardware.

it's got an exploit that can not be patched ever.
