Playing Morrowind for the first time any advice?

Did you use some of Connary's textures in that?
Likely most of them, yeah.

I don't remember what they are called, but there are a number of mods that DRAMATICALLY improve the character models. Go and get these.
Mainly Better Bodies and Better Clothes. There are numerous face mods, though, but you need to sort of sort through all that shit to find what you need.

Is there a cumulative(sp?) mod out there for all the gfx mods?
Not that I'm aware of. Just piece everything together.

LOL, could you 7z your meshes and and textures folders and upload it? :D

Well, just the landscape stuff if that's identifiable.

Edit nevermind... on a megaupload link from here:

I can't see what is so good about Morrowind at all. I recently picked it up at a Steam sale and it is slow, has an absolutely horrid interface (a big deal in RPGs) and very shoddy combat.

it's an OLD game man . . . it came out in 2002, had you been playing it in 2002, you would have been impressed top to bottom with the game. I was there then and played it a lot then, I've played it a lot over the years. This thread is gonna end up making me reinstall it . . . .

DAMN YOU

Honestly, try to look past the graphics and the issues you described, delve deeper in it, it really was a game that was ahead of it's time.

In fact, as myself and others have said, we'd have rather had Morrowind released with the game engine that Oblivion used than Oblivion itself.

I'll stick at it, but I keep getting insta-killed by anything stronger than a mudcrab...

What was so wrong with Oblivion that everyone hated? I thought it was pretty good :(

Oblivion was great, but Morrowind had most things better except graphics and a few combat mechanic details.

Mod morrowind right and it will look just about as good as Oblivion. Old graphics are for those who don't take the time to mod.

Well, it's complicated.

Nobody has or will say that Oblivion is a bad game, it's NOT, just that graphically it was a huge step forward for the Elder Scrolls series. The story was not bad, but if you stuck at it and tried doing the main storyline you could finish it in less than 10 hours, IIRC (not sure, fact check). Morrowwind, you really had to PLAY the game, and it seems like Bethseda just crammed so much in there, and you were forced to use your imagination. Man, you're the Outlander, arriving on a ship, you have silt striders, you have the Ashlands, you even have the Thieves Guild with the Gentleman guy, you have the various Houses you can gain faction reputation with and choose to serve in . . .

There's even the White Blade of Woe I mentioned hidden in a guard tower in Balmora . . . stealing it can take quite a while and a lot of skill to do . . .

Man, there's just way too much for me to put it in there. I understand COMPLETELY what you're referring to about getting pwned by anything stronger than a mudcrab, that happened to ME when I was starting the game.

I hate recommending FAQ's because they ruin games, but try to use one to get you through the initial few hours of the game and then you'll be powerful enough to hold your own and explore it.

Man, there's just way too much in that game . . .

If Bethseda re-released it with their next generation game engine, and added more dialogue options, I guarantee it would outsell Oblivion by a large margin.

Well I took the plunge and spent maybe Two hours yesterday installing and fiddling with the MODs. - I bought the game at a garage sale for .50c and never bothered with it until now.
Thank you limitedaccess for the links.

1st time morrowind play through for me!
There goes my Xmas!

Edit:
Had a hard time getting Vista to like it and gave up; Just used my XP partition and now it's gravy. Bit of a hassle, but there you go.

This game is def. harder than most games. sometimes takes 1 hour just to find where the quest starts. But nonetheless very fun game and challenging, no fast travel ftw :)

Such tact. It's all true. Morrowind is a better game.

Just reinstalled Morrowind after not having played it for 5-6 years and it's apparent that it's, on the whole, a better game than Oblivion. Artistic direction, atmosphere, content amount and originality just blows Oblivion away. Oblivion has better gameplay, AI and, UI and graphics, but this is too be expected for a newer game. My main problem with Oblivion is it essentiallly removed the originality of Morrowind's alien-like world opting for a very cookie-cutter fantasy world.

To be fair a large part of this is attributable to setting though. Cyrodiil, where Oblivion is set, is basically the "cookie cutter" fantasy type setting. Whereas in Morrowind, the predominant race and cultural influence are not humans. There next game, Skyrim, probably will not be relatively exotic as well, as it is set in a human province, albeit Nordic type fantasy settings are less prevalent then western medieval European type. Hope for TES 6 to be set in a nonhuman province if you want something exotic.

Oblivion did a few things poorly but mods made the game so much better, in fact the same can be said for Morrowind but Morrowind was just a much more interesting place because it had a much wider variety in the cities and places all around the island.

Overall though the Oblivion modding has gotten so much more advanced then what Morrowind was but both games have some great mods that's for sure.

Morrowind was a much more solid game out of the box, though. You could easily play it 'vanilla', like I did the first time, and have a really good experience. The number of gameplay mods I use is minimal. Oblivion, on the other hand, really demands a dozen or more gameplay-changing mods in addition to major UI overhauls, engine-related optimizers like Streamline and so on.

A word of important advice, if you have UAC (vista, win 7) then do NOT install it in the program files folder.

C:\games is plenty good.

see what you made me do?

loaded on w7x64, looks like it needs to be run as admin.
the whole mod thing, that is a little overwhelming
on the other hand there are mods that add boobiez!!!

I'm playing it vanilla, i'm riding dirty, stop hatin!

made a mage and i'm having fun pwning lol

just found the corpse of the tax collector and that dude who falls out of the sky

time to catch his killer, then head off to Balmora

I'm about 90% done with that guide (not installing any of the additional lands yet). Better bodies gave me an issue at first too. If you're getting errors and exclamation points on the chars you need to go into the folder and then copy the files from the nude or non-nude folders your choice) into the parent directory.

well, worked through a few sections in the guide and got frustrated
doing this stuff just takes lots of time
some websites gone, other registration walls, mod managers that don't really work very well,
scripting errors in the game.
I looked up morrowind on some torrent sites and what do you know
there are a few mod compilation packages based on the morrowind2009 instructions
so i'll be trying one of these to see how it works

I was a huge fan of Oblivion when it came out and with the recent annoucement of Skyrim it's made me want to play another TES game. I hope the graphics aren't too big of a problem for me cause I don't like looking at characters that look like they belong in a popup book.

Damn you... damn you to hell. Reading this thread makes me wanna play Morrowind again. If I find out who you are I'm gonna hunt you down and whack you with the Sword of White Woe or Umbra's Sword...

==========================================

The above are some of the mods I've installed in addition to a visual enhancement pack which you seem to have found. I believe the above are all compatible with each other, but it has been a long time since I played Morrowind.

Using MGE with the right tweaks and patience, you can achieve some pretty good graphics detail even by todays standards. Sun shafts, glare, infinite view distance, HDR, bloom, AO. The works.

Could you ever get the underground to work without it resulting in a buggy crashfest? I've tried it a couple of times, but I just couldn't finish it for those reasons.

^^^

Hmmmm..... come to think of it after a certain point during The Underground plot I do remember getting some annoying crashes. I actually don't think I completed The Underground quest...

Oh well, scratch off The Underground from my list. I do have to say that I had about 35 to 40 different mods installed so the could have been some conflicts. The Underground was the last mod I installed in Morrowind.

Brand spanking new ubermod:

Morrowind 2011

Looks like good, clear step-by-step instructions from start to finish to install a compendium of all the good mods. Possibly better than Morrowind Expanded which, to be honest, I find difficult to complete successfully. I'm not going to try it myself, because I promised myself I am done with that game.

that is such a nasty beast of a crashfest, but from what I hear it's a really awesome mod. One day, I'll muster enough courage and knowledge of workarounds to try to finish the thing... right before I retire that character.

No screens that I could see, plus I can't imaging it being much better looking than the result from the 2009 guide based on the mod set, especially if you have already followed the 2009 guide.

Looks pretty damn good.

I'll give it a try once at home. Hopefully, as the article suggests, this might tide me over a bit until Skyrim.
