Played Quake 2 Lately?

I'm not sure if you have tried it yet, but download the DOOM demo off of Steam, its awesome old-school fun with new-school technology.

You mean the new game? It is on my list, I've been holding out on a lot of recent releases till I get a new video card to enjoy the latest bunch maxed out. It does look pretty fun overall from the videos.

I have a 7970 running at 1200Mhz on my Media Centre and it can run the game quite well on a single 1080p screen. nearly all settings in the high-ultra range, 60FPS vsync cap.

That does look awesome, I liked 1 a bit more myself as well. Map E1M8 was my fav for vs stuff.

Getting the itch to go through these again myself now O_O
Ah, Ziggurat Vertigo, tons of fun. Did you play with the mod with posted?

SPOILERS if you have not played it yet......which I can't imagine.

Great timing. While digging into the new Doom I've had yearnings for the old Quake 2 experience, that game also really resonated with me. The monsters, pipebomb/nade launcher, grappling hook mods and the rest. Remember being wowed by a friend with a K6-2 running it years back.

Quake 2 multiplayer on the office network with my voodoo card smuggled into my corporate Dell... good times. What's the mod with the grappling hook, my coworkers were nuts for that.

Honestly though, Quake 3 came out like 2 years after Quake 2 and it was a whole different experience. Graphics x10

Lithium for Q2 was fucking epic imo, lithium CTF with lmctf runes + lithium runes was also fun, haste + vampire was always my fav.

I still have the stuff to run a lithium server too. might have to set one up. plus a lot of maps

That does sound very familiar for some reason although didn't get to play mods so much unless I was at a mates place :( The four way LANs were glorious though. Cheers for the heads up :)

Still got my Quake 2 and Q2 Mission Pack The Reckoning CDs.

Looked good with my PowerVR M3D/Matrox Mystique combo powered with a P200 MMX.

Loved Quake 1 and 2...always hated 3. Still got the CD for that too.

Oh my....they still work on Windows 10! Must say though I did get a bit motion sick watching the run throughs.

Way too smooth!

I don't remember what patch I'm running for Q2, get that tonight and edit my post. For Q1, I used the vispatch mods for all 4 of my versions - Quake plus Expansions 1 and 2, and Shrak plus an add-on called Zerstorer : Testament of the Destroyer. Vispatch essentially added see through water and mirror effects.

Will do - for me it's fun to see how my SGI Onyx 2 (~$236k in 1999) play games that my PC handled fairly well (though RTCW did a number on my GeForce 2 MX when it came out).

I was able to get darkplaces-xonotic, iortcw-git, ioquake3 (though it looks like I might try spearmint, an improved ioquake3), & yamagi-quake2 (& addons) working. My next attempts will be hexen2 & quake4 (both compiled already). All of the id games look really good on my netbook. I have to wonder if I can get somewhere with Doom 3 (if Quake 4 doesn't run horribly).

I try to play at 5760 x 1200 when games support ultra wide, sounds like the game is more optimized than I thought though. I have not looked at any real benchmarks and data points yet, just enough to know I was interested in playing it. Thanks for the info, I'll bump it up on my wish list :)

At that resolution, you may need to turn some things down.

Finally got it working on W10. Never played it, started only from Q3. After that, will try the original.

It's been a few years since I've played Q2. I last played it with both Q2Evolved and Q2Max. Both were decent upgrades at the time. I have my original discs, but also have it in Steam these days. Haven't tried any of the newer upgrades/source-ports. This was the first game I played with both a Matrox M3D and Orchid Voodoo. It's probably time to play it again.

Quake 2 was a great game for the people that missed Doom and were sick of the aesthetic of Quake 1. At the time, that was me.
However in hindsight, we've run into so many other games that have gone that route, I miss Quake 1. #2 is absolutely what we needed back then, but we never went back to #1 again.

Holy crap! I totally forgot about that mod! It was amazeballs. Man, what a time for gaming! AHL, CS 1.1, Opera HL.

After much research I can recommend the following for anyone who wants to compile the great id & Raven 3D games for Linux
I compiled all of these with Manjaro (Arch-based) through AUR (yaourt -S <pacakagename>)

Quake 1 - darkplaces-xonotic
Quake 2 - yamagi-quake2, yamagi-quake2-rogue, yamagi-quake2-xatrix <- for the topic of the thread
Quake 3 - ioquake3 or spearmint (fork of ioquake3)
RTCW - iortcw (merger of ioquake3 & rtcw code)
Doom 3 - dhewm3
Hexen 2 - hexen2 (Hammer of Thyrion)

I did attempt to use rbdoom-3-bfg for Doom 3 BFG but it had way too many glitches graphically. Might have something to do with my netbook's Radeon HD 8250 though.
