Budget: $180-220
Willing to go higher if you can convince me.

I havnt got Ram in 2 years. I am a little behind. Last time I read all the reviews I went with Mushkin. I have been buying Mushkin from 2002.
I am very fond of Cas Latency: 2-2-2

I have heard some good things about CORSAIR, OCZ. What about Geil, Kingston?

I DO NOT want my ram to be my bottle neck, as it is right now.

What would be the best Ram for my system?
My Shuttle
AMD 64 3200+
1600MHz System Bus HyperTransport
Memory: DDR 266/333/400

Ram I have been looking at:
Kingston DDR400 2-2-2-5-1, 2.7v __$224.00
Mushkin DDR400 2-2-2, 2.5v-2.8v, _$225.00
Corsair DDR400 2-2-2-5, 2.75v ____$243.27
OCZ DDR400 2-2-2?, 2.75v _______$275.00

Do I even need 2-2-2 ? What is the different in ram for those 4? and I do want to do a little Ocing on these. Thanks for any input you can give, I am out of the loop.

i personally would recommend crucial ballistix if you want to oc on a budget.
i can do 225mhz with 2-2-2, and up to the limit of my memory controller, which is 245mhz with 2.5-2-2 without having to revert to ungodly voltages.
most other ram has to drop down to 2.5-3-3 to get that high, and i dunno how many of the sticks of ram you listed above can make it to 225mhz at 2-2-2. i think around 220 is pretty good for tccd at 2-2-2

Yeah, I havnt touched Volts at all, I would like to stay away. So why do you pick Crucial? price?

Well crucial specs it a 2.8 and warrants it for +/- .2 (2.6-3.0V)

Mine likes lower volts at lower speed and higher at higher. It needs low with the 5:4 otherwise it won't boot. Weird quirk I guess.

though if i'm reading the link correctly, "990927" is the stuff that's supposedly made with UTT chips that go in ocz vx..

2700? No way. It's either BH-6 that didn't make the bin for pc3200 222 special, or CH-5. Hmm. If it's really old could be AH-6, I suppose.

Order Date: 06-29-03
512MB PC2700 222 - Black Hi Perf Level II

no idea what Ah-6 is or Bh-6 I got this ram after it was out for about a month. Was top of the line back then....

he was commenting on the broken link in a silly way ;)

um.. well the ah/bh ram is old stuff that winbond used to make. i'm sure if you put it in the fs/ft forum and said that it can do 211mhz with 2.7v at 2-2-2, there will definitly be some interested people.

long story made short: there are different types of ram chips to make memory out of. 4 of significance:

samsung TCCD - goes to pretty high mhz at relaxed timings and low voltage (2.6-2.8v)

micron 5b-g - the stuff that goes in crucial ballistix. like voltage, but doesn't need it. gets to decent speeds with moderate voltage (i can do 245mhz at 2.5-2-2-10 with 2.7v, probably a lot higher with more voltage and a better memory controller)

winbond/infineon UTT - the stuff that's in ocz VX. anandtech recently did a review on this stuff. it behaves very similarly to the holy grail of low latency overclocking, bh-5, but it needs more voltage.

which is similar to what your ram should have, bh-6. the 5 indicates 5ns, which is 200mhz, 6 is 6ns or 166mhz. which is also pc2700.
basically the premise of this stuff is to pump it with mad voltage and get to 250+ mhz at 2-2-2 timings. if you read that review on VX that i just mentioned, you'll understand why this is a good thing.
