Photo sort

Not sure if I can really explain this the way I want to do it, but here goes.

I take 1500+ photos each race night, and I get requests for images of specific drivers.

Here's what I'd like to do:
Keep all images from a night in one folder
Sort images by specific driver into another folder without doubling my disk space.

Is there a way to have a folder where everything in the folder is merely a reference to objects in other folders?

You should be using LightRoom for this if you aren't already. Sounds like the color-flagging system might work really well for you. LR also has various collection and tagging features that can be used to organize photos from large sets, as well as find images with similar criteria across various folders.
