And this is okay how? Never mind, I get it now. They made a deal with the city so it's okay.

The city allowed advertising giant Titan to install Bluetooth pinging devices in telephone booths last fall — and privacy advocates warn the deal could turn the Big Apple into a giant data-mining matrix, or deepen the already vast network of surveillance tools used by law enforcement agencies.

I thought the only place phone booths existed anymore was in a collectors house.

One of the many reasons My bluetooth remains shut off.

Do you even know how bluetooth works?

Anyway, it looks like all of this is tied to some kind of app you are expected to already have installed. Seems to me like most people will NOT have this installed so their beacons cant track you. Usually what happens next is Titan partners with some prominent app that already is installed, say facebook, and thats how they get access to your phone. Otherwise these devices should be useless with a pretty low collection point. Unless they're already partnered with Google or something with backdoors ready to snoop.
