Trying to get a general concenus as to if the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition is worth $20 more then the Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition. I am putting it into a gaming system to play newer (ie 2011) games such as Rift, Witcher 2, Dragon Age 2, and such

No. Turn the multiplier up to 17 on the 955 and call it a day. Unless a potential extra 100MHz or so on high overclocks (3.9GHz range) is worth $20 to you.

Well, make sure you get yourself a C3 955. C2's don't perform as well (higher power consumption and lower max overclock). Otherwise, all the Phenom II x4 BE C3 processors perform similarly.

You'll be really hard pressed to find a C2 chip anywhere in stock, anymore :p. Even the Phenon II X2 range has moved on :)

hmm im in the same boat, but i wanna get a x4 that can hit 4.0
is there any that can?

the 955 and 965's will OC nearly the same, the C3's with good cooling should be able to get close to 4.0.

the 965 is NOT worth the $20 unless you will not be overclocking

Most, if not all, C3 x4's are capable of hitting 4.0 ghz. What differs is the amount of voltage it takes, and how much heat it will produce.

Man I miss Fry's motherboard/cpu combo deals. Bought the 965 with a gigabyte 785 mobo last year for $129. But yeah, go with the 955 if it's a c3. Save your $20 on minimal 100mhz difference and put it toward a cooler, like the hyper 212 plus.

I got three 955's and one 965 C2 revisions. The ONLY reason I got the 965 is it came with the Crosshair III when I got it. But clock for clock they are derned near matched. The 955's clock a bit higher. The 955 is a better deal.
