Phenom II x4 965 + Asus m4a77td overclocking problem

Im trying to overclock the 965 on stock air cooler on stock volts past 3.7 and when I do as soon as it gets into windows, or shortly after the screen just severely artifacts and it reboots and won't ente windows again, I read all over that people get 3.8 to 4 on stock volts and cooler... What am I doing wrong?

4 ghz is almost an high as a 965 will go you can't do it on stock volts
