Well, here’s to the future. The Pentagon has approved the further development of a flying, armed, armored Humvee. Here’s the topper…..Codename: Transformer. Maybe we will be in for a larger surprise than we expect. :D

The two companies are still a ways away from building flying Humvees; the first stage of the DARPA project is merely working on conceptual designs. The total funding available for Transformer is about $40 million. Officials from both companies declined to comment on the record about the negotiations, and DARPA did not respond to request to comment.

Dear Mr Obama:

Please stop giving the military such a big budget as they seem to spend quite a bit of useless shit, the debt is rising faster than ever and needs to stop or we're all going to be broke.

Thank you,
Mr US Taxpayer

Actually that would be up to the US Congress, whether Democratic or Libertarian infected Republicans, Think of the rich, powerful 74yr old Koch twins, They want little of the US Government, As they see all government as in the way of pure unrestrained profit and so would rather be subversive, But there hasn't been a real Republican Party since about the 1970's since Richard M. Nixon was President of the US.

why not just put wheels on a helicopter, would be cheaper, heh

this is cool I guess, but it seems like it would need clearance to take off with the blades, wouldn't work so well on a narrow road with trees right beside you, only in open spaces, kinda limits its potential IMO

Only 40 million for the prototype contract??? I don't think you can afford the design budget for next years Honda Civic for that kind of money. GM predicted it would cost them some 400-500 million in engineering and development costs for the Chevy volt, and they want a flying armored vehicle??? Something doesn't sound quite right, maybe that 40 mil is just for a feasibility/proof of concept study. In any event it does seem like a bit of a waste at the moment, unless some new developments in lifting technology have come up we might as well just buy some Hinds from the russians, or maybe that's what this is actually going to end up as, a US version of the Hind

how many years you think it would take the terrorists to catch up when they live in freaking caves?

our military is bigger something like the next 17 largest militaries in the world combined.

don't pretend we are in any more or less danger from terrorists if we have flying humvees.

military spending is ridiculous, it's not the cold war anymore and even then it was bullshit to spend that much more than every other country on the planet.

it has nothing to do with protecting us anymore and they brainwashed you into believing it is,

Tis true but at least the military uses lots of money for research and comes up with new tech.

Hate to break it to you, but the defense department has been spending money on "stupid shit" for a lot longer than Obama has been president...

And in terms of stupid shit, this isn't even really that stupid.

Well I hate to break it to you, I know that they've been spending money on "stupid shit" for longer than I've been alive.

As for as this isn't really that stupid? I mean ok, yeah there has been some stupid shit but really

its more dangerous than the cold war. there you dealt with bunch of commies and socialists that had a little common sense and the desire to live the life; here you are talking about bunch of terrorists that are born to kill others

we have to put even more money into the US military to make sure no one even comes close; Russians are already spending more and US must be able to bring China down if the time comes

With cuts in Pentagon which resulted in the cancellations of more B2 and F22 airplanes, it's obvious the progress has stopped and it is dangerous. US military is practically the only thing stopping terrorists and Russian satellite states from taking over. History shows that Europeans always fall easy when it counts the most especially now that they are packed with terrorist sympathizer immigrants and leftists

For hippies like you loving to critize US at every opportunity, ofcourse it hurts for US military to get stronger

Yet, lets not fund a renewable energy infrastructure so we have to continually rely on nations filled with terrorists to fuel our oil addiction, pissing off terrorists even more, and making us have to spend more and more money on defense!

Sigh, really? why can't you asshats stay in genmay where you belong?

The sad truth is we benefit domestically from a lot of ideas founded in our oversized military complex.

Thumbs up for futurtist military technology.

Thumbs down for buying it from a private corporation.

The terrorist threat is greater than many people think and in order to fight them US must progressively continue strengthening their army. Dont forget that Russia and China are massively rebuilding their army as well which is also a threat. In terms of majority of the social issues such as stem cell research I find myself in agreement with liberals but when it comes to security and foreign policy I definitely share the republican view

Just remember, continuously pouring money into the military and military objectives and thinking war was the answer to everything is what brought down the Soviet Union in the first place.

If we don't get off the oil and become self reliant for energy needs (which is going to take a fair chunk of change to rework and upgrade the underlying infrastructure) we're screwed, terrorism or not.

The terrorists have already won, by making us so paranoid most people think dumping our entire financial load into military endeavors while ignoring everything else is the right thing to do. Don't think for a minute Bin Laden forgets how the Soviets were defeated, he was there. Now he's psyched our politicians and populace into committing to the same mistakes. Communism, Socialism, Capitalism, none of that matters if people fall for the same old bullshit mind games.

Yeah yeah, blame the lack of edit button. regardless I'm not getting all neo-political agenda. I just wish the military would keep the money in house. Plenty of bright young people in the military could be put to better use.

you can't really 'defeat' religious dedication with physical-based technology, at best all it does is create another deterrent. there are a few ways to defeat the terrorist threat that we currently have, but they're almost impossible to carry out because we're fighting against a dedicated force that believes in what they're doing. the only ways to really defeat that is to make them question their belief or completely wipe them out, both of which are close to impossible to do with any amount of physical force used.

do I have any kind of answer as to how to really defeat this threat? no, but I do think that the military could be working on better technological advancements than 'flying cars' most likely using out-dated tech. developing lighter, more efficient and durable engines and power sources would open more possible advancements for transportation and weapons platforms and easily benefit the industrial and consumer sectors more than a hybrid vehicle for solely military use (there is a 'flying car' being developed for consumer use currently, but it's quite a bit impractical, though it's hard to deny the 'fun' factor).

the point I'm getting at is based on the same feelings most poster have here, we need more 'practical' development spending to be done with our military. there's no question that the military needs to continuously develop new tech to increase it's power, but what ever happened to practicality and eventual integration of resulting beneficial tech into the industrial and consumer sectors? (I know it still happens, but it doesn't seem to show as much as it probably should)

I'm definitely all for investing into finding other sources for energy and unfortunately it is something that is easily overlooked and underappreciated for lots of people. But to do this we need something of a cohesive plan and approach by the government and I dont think it has happened yet

We need a good military to defend ourselves and remind the enemies that we are capable of hitting back if they decide to do something stupid
The fundemental approach of changing the culture in middle east to fight terrorism is good in practice; but it will take at least half a century for changes to show themselves in any meaningful way. It's a long way off and we have to protect ourselves

A long range bomber is a great tool in dealing with rogue nations. F22s give army the air superiority that it needs in dealing with the enemy. You gotta take russians and chinese into account

You can't beat an abstract notion with technology.

"Evil" or "terrorists" change goalposts everytime someone in power wants something. But keep chasing that carrot, stupid horses.

Nope but we can make sure we are prepared to face any situation if (unfortuntaly) it becomes necessary

I believe it's important to stay one step ahead

Your thinking is flawed. Outspending the next guy does not make you inherently safer. All the flying tanks and helicopters with wheels in the world will not save us against terrorist attacks within the US and the long term damage fear creates. This is where we are vulnerable, and always will be.

Preparing for a war against China is sort of silly. The economic destruction to China that would ensue if they entered into a war with the US or any Western nation would be quite noticeable. Same goes the other way around though. The US would suffer economically if we had to fight against China. China is far more likely to go after a country or two in SE Asia and the US will just run it's mouth and bark. Too much to lose by cutting ties with China. China's strength is it's ability to field a massive army but that is of little value against today's weaponry. This is not 60 years ago.

Now, if you care to tell me how the US is stopping Russian satellite states from 'taking over', I would like to hear how this is so. Also, as many terrorists as you think our military actually kills, I would have to guess that more are created. As has been said in this thread, you can not defeat ideology with weaponry. All you can do is play whack-a-mole and each time you swat one down three will pop up in it's place.

I am in favor of the US continuing to develop new technology but I would prefer if somebody actually consider if we are spending money on something with any practical value first.

Nope but we can make sure we are prepared to face any situation if (unfortuntaly) it becomes necessary

I believe it's important to stay one step ahead

It is impossible to be prepared for everything and trying to do so is a fool's task.

We are a billion and one steps ahead of the terrorists you speak of in terms of technology but it means little. You do not seem to grasp this.

Not necessarily, if they're not being used then they're really a huge waste of money.

If you would have said Chinese I might have agreed with you to a point, but you had to toss in the terrorist word. And I think "terrorists" really have shown us all the "high tech weaponry" really is useless in the "war on terror", bombers are useful, but they hardly need to be stealthy, and fighters are worse than useless since "terrorists" typically don't have jets.

It's going to be really hard to fight that battle against other super powers if we can't afford the armed forces we have. If China does go to war with us, their first move is to say "ok pay up" and then they win by bankruptcy.

Hate to break it to you, but if China starts a shooting war with the US or any other Western state, settling our monetary debts is going to be the last thing on anyone's mind.

Economics != law. The U.S. government could say tomorrow, "We're not paying you back, China," and guess what China could do about it? Pretty much nothing. If things could be done about that, then Hitler would never have been able to "afford" going to war against Poland in the first place. Google 'World War I reparations' to see what I mean.

I don't think France's first move against Germany was to say, "Hah! You can't invade us! You owe us money!"
