Pennsylvania Proposes Tax on Mature Video Games Due to Violence, School Shootings

Lets also tax movies and tv shows with any kind of violence while we're at it...

This has nothing to do with anything but money. The state has handed it out for a long long time and the bills are coming due.

You should take a look at US crime statistics. Violent crime is on a downward trend and has been for a long time. The only violent crime on the uptick right now (and massively so) is mass shootings and there are definitely a hell of a lot more complex things going on with that rise than violent media. Things like how piss poor mental health help is in the US.

That is true, that is why I specified that type of violence. Violence as a whole has been continuously declining, although the violent crimes that do happen tend to be more violent than norm, just fewer of them.

I'm going to start buying my gas in Ohio now and now my video games too. PA is going to lose out even more now. Commonwealth state BS.

I'm amazed no one mentioned taxing the ONLY thing Directly Linked to School Shootings, GUNS.

But we can't talk reason, lol.

The only thing? What about all these shooters being on SSRIs? The media gets most its ad money from Big Pharma so they don’t report it, you gotta did deep yourself.

I guess they they threw psychology out the window when making this tax. What about violent everything else? TV, movies, etc?

Also, how in the world is a 10% tax on anything going to stop shootings? This is beyond stupid. This is yet another mindless money grab.

Or, you know, mental health. The best parenting in the world isn't going to do jack if a person is severely mentally ill and not getting the right kind of help for it.
And parents are usually the ones responsible for getting them help.

Unless they're adults. Of course, since the vast majority of people are not experts on mental health, they will trust the "respected" psychiatrist that tells them their kid just needs a bunch of drugs to "fix" them.

Yea, but the topic is school shootings, which has generally been committed by mostly young people.

Well this moeny got towards fixing the issues or is it just a case grab pretende to do good ?

at some point we have to realize that the us system is a whole is just built to produce criminals and psychopathic behavior.

Likely the same good as tobacco and alcohol carrying a higher tax. That did about as much good to help people cut the bad habits.

Gun violence is a multi-faceted issue, there's not one thing that's going to miraculously solve it.

I think we need to tax the "written word" because that's what started it all. Combined with "pictures" people painted it caused havoc across the world.

This same thing is said every few years for whatever the new thing is: Scary stories, books, comics, television, rock and roll music, and so on.

Its just the mature video game's turn.

Terrible Idea.

Violent Video games make my life run smooth... THAT is my fix for bullshit I deal with at work.

Fuck off. Glad I dont live in PA... Cause taxing my stress release form is NOT the answer.

Let see what cars cause the most accidents, and tax the hell out of them as well.

it's PA, the land where once a year a groundhog tells them if there will be an early spring or not ... any questions?

and dont get me started on the sugar drink tax.. that shits pushed a 2 ltr soda past 3.90

I can usually find a 2L soda on sale for 99 cents, although I'd usually have to buy 4 to get that price.
I usually only buy them when we have a party, as I rarely drink soda.

AHH yes this bullshit again. Despite dozens of studies showing no link between videogames and actual violent behavior, the moral outrage crowd still wants to use them as a scape goat because .... I am a worthless old person/Dumb redneck/Concerned mother (I.E dumb fuck housewife) , and anything I don't understand must be dangerous. Unfortunately the moral outrage crowd and the I don't believe in science crowd are the same crowd, so no amount of research and logic will stem the tide of their superstition and ignorance. Just have to wait for the over 60 crowd to literally die off; and then maybe the rational among us can edge them out and restore some sanity (assuming the nearly as crazy social justice squad doesnt just come along and replace one kind of insanity with another ). Of course the amount of damage done in the meantime will be shitty but hey short of violent revolution not much you can do but suck it up and roll with the stupidity.

I live there. We call my area Pennsyltucky but it’s feeling a lot more like commiefornia lately.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I think Unreal Tournament 2004 got me through a lot more than anything.

Why not push legislation that forces retailers to check ID and verify the age of the buyer of said ESRB rated games...no different than carding someone for tobacco or alcohol purchases?

Adding a tax doesn't solve the "problem", imo.

California tried passing such a law back in the mid-2000s, but the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_v._Entertainment_Merchants_Ass'n

Amusingly, as mentioned by other in this thread the state senator who drafted this law, Leland Yee, is in federal prison right now for trafficking guns to Islamic terrorist in the Philippines.

Can we tax something else that I don't use like guns? I mean, it is the guns killing people not the games.

This is really a good point, and I wish people would really think about this more. I've realized what the real issue is here - stupid people don't know how to guide, channel, or lead, only suppress. Rarely if ever though do they consider the consequence of the attempted suppression of people's natural desires.

Making it harder for kids, especially boys, to get in team sports or play violent video games doesn't actually eliminate the desire to fight. Just like banning porn doesn't get rid of those urges either. And as any idiot knows - you're making things worse.

There is always the ultimate reality, People will blame everything except themselves, Homer's Illiad is a classic and one would think taught in schools as mandatory reading, yet is 1000% more violent and sexual than any game I have played to date, the point is without context anything can be excessive or a negative infulence on an impressionable mind, that includes adults as well as younger children and young adults.
Have you ever read the Bible? A hole lot of violence in that book. Perhaps we should tax that book as well.

I see that no one else in this thread (may have missed it, but....) pointed this little jewel out, according to the article, a Republican introduced this bill.

Would it not at least be a slightly better argument that the bullet is what kills the person? If we aren't going to blame the person using it and are going after inanimate objects, we might as well go for the one that actually touches the person.
