Those responsible for PCIe have announced that they are fervently at work on its next rendition: PCI Express 5.0, which will boast bandwidth capabilities of 32GT/s, is currently slated for 2019, although I imagine they are being extremely optimistic, considering all of the delays the technology has seen over its history. When are we getting PCIe 4.0 again?

“In our 25-year history, PCI-SIG has maintained its commitment to our rigorous specification development process, while delivering specifications that are in lock-step with industry requirements for high-performance I/O,” said Al Yanes, PCI-SIG Chairman and President. “PCIe 5.0 technology is the next evolution that will set the standard for speed, and we are confident that its 32GT/s bandwidth will surpass industry needs.” The preceding PCIe 4.0 specification is designed with key functional enhancements that future-proof the PCIe architecture design, thereby accelerating future specification development. This undertaking, along with improved silicon design processes, serves as the foundation for the PCIe 5.0 specification.

If they skip 4.0 and go straight to 5.0, doesn't that make 5.0 really just 4.0?

I think they took a page out of the Microsoft playbook, aka Windows 10 really being Windows 9...
Well really, it's not Microsoft's fault that programmers took the easiest way out when setting up compatibility checks in their stuff...

I imagine they mean to have the standard ratified by 2019. There may be prototypes by then but I wouldn't expect it in consumer hardware that soon/

If they manage to roll this out in 2019, I can see the industry skipping 4.0 and going straight to 5.0.

I thought the same thing.

Given Navi is due in 2019, I wonder if it makes sense to have it adhere to the PCI-E 5.0 standard? That so long as backward compatibility is maintained - People might like a card that can fit into a 3.0 board now, but has 5.0 capability when those motherboards are ready.

True, but that means the card can actually USE those speeds. Current cards just barely hit the x16 3.0 limit...Navi might be fast, but it's not going to need 4x the bandwidth.

Didn't they used to skip certain numbers like 4 because they refer to 'death' or suchlike in less clear thinking nations?
