So I had a PayPal dispute for a videocard I sold on eBay. I wasn't worried since I shipped the card to the address on file, tracking automatically uploaded since I used the integrated FedEx shipping stuff, insurance, and signature. The tracking info showed delivered as expected with their signature.

So 60 days later they dispute saying unauthorized charge. I didn't have to do anything on my end since the tracking info stuff is all automatic. Dispute is settled and I don't have to do anything since I was covered by seller protection.

    But here's the rub.

So did this person get a free video card? They disputed the charge even though it was shipped to their address and signed by the card holder. They got their money back and they get to keep the merch. How does that make sense? Should I start 'buying' all my big ticket items this way?

No. It's a chargeback and it definitely will affect their account after a few of them.

I have had this happen to me also. People have been doing this with PayPal and eBay for a long time. Committing fraud by taking advantage of policies.

I just had an $1185 PP charge dispute settled in my favor yesterday. I shipped a BNIB Zotac 1080Ti via UPS with signature confirmation to the ebay buyer's / PP confirmed address. The day after receiving it, the buyer filed for a fraudulent charge and messaged me on ebay that they were not paying to ship the card back to me. I replied "...that's fine, because I do not accept returns anyway..." Told them it's not my problem, it's you and your bank's problem. Approximately one week later, PP placed my account in the red for $1185 while they investigated the claim. Within a week of their review, they returned my balance to zero. I had no input during this whole PP process.

There was also some new scam going around with hacked accounts on eBay/PayPal, ordering video cards with 2 day shipping option, shipped to the confirmed address on file for the account.
Apparently the plan was some kind of refund scam if they still had control of the account by the time the item was delivered.

We found out about it when all at once the same video cards were selling really quickly, all with the same 2 day shipping selected, so we did manual call ups to verify & figured it out.
eBay and PayPal also both said it was a new scam, PayPal was on it the first day, eBay took about a week to realize what was going on.

I knew a person from my local "church" that did this for a bit. He thought it was funny that he got "free expensive stuff." I later learned that PP put his account into collection for over 2k worth of chargebacks. He was then bragging about how he wasn't going to pay the collection. He took it all in stride as if nothing happened. Last I checked he was having a hard time buying a car or getting approved for rent. It did hurt him a bit. To this day I still don't know if he paid it all back or just didn't care. Guy was a total asshole. The type of douchbag that would purposedly make other people's life harder.
