Why is he too old to be doing that? Hell even in todays day and age we have Admirals and Generals that are in the service well into their 60s. Admiral Rickover didnt retire from service until 81 I believe. So given that theres literally no reason Picard cant still be a Captain in the future make believe world with highly advanced medical tech.

Now it’s the TNG fans turn to be bent over, like what STD is currently doing to TOS fans at the moment... For those wondering, this is coming from the same production staff as STD, and now including an even greater asshat in the guy that gave us the worst Batman movies ever made, as well as many direct to DVD movies...

A fucking shame what is happening to once great SciFi franchises at the moment.

No Q only claimed to be omnipotent. If you watched the show he clearly was not. Also the Q species were not strictly immortal as we did see a civil war and some deaths (i.e. stripped of their powers and could die etc)

While I didn't like this either this actually might have been the right thing to do. Apparently Discovery was a hit and did well for CBS online only. Would it have done as well on broadcast? Maybe but maybe not.

Streaming might be a better economic model for something has a smaller but very loyal fanbase.

I have no issue with it being on their streaming service.. but not at the expense of it also appearing on their regular broadcast channel. thats what really annoyed me. I pay for the local channels, of which CBS is one, yet they did not air the show, after the 1st episode, on their regular broadcast network. online only.

I don't think I can take him seriously as Jean Luc Picard after seeing him as Walter Blunt. :D

Quite the opposite actually. Netflix have let it slip that it was very unhappy with viewing figures, and not too long after Discovery finished airing, CBS stopped reporting what it’s membership levels are, and have not published any since. Netflix have also stopped financially supporting the production of STD, and are now only paying for the streaming rights, due to poor viewership and the fan reaction to the series.

Ok, but it must have done well for CBS as it's hard to see why they'd be doing another season and a new project. And there's been talk of other ST projects in the pipeline.

He'll be running a vineyard. Or are they planning to undo TNG?
As an ST fan I disown the people liking discovery. I liked all the series, yes even Enterprise but I don't want to be associated with anyone who likes the drivel that is discovery. It broke my childhood memories in 40 minutes. I disliked the pilot of ds9 as well but that was just boring. Discovery is full of shit. It ruins everything that starfleet ever stood for. I thought the movie reboot was bad, but it was at least faithful to the spirit of Star Trek. I don't know what is this garbage, but it's not star trek, it is just usurping the name.

At the moment? JJ Dreck isn't a new thing. They put a guy who publicly bragged about not liking Trek, who clearly was going to abuse the franchise for his personal gain (to get his claws into Star Wars, the franchise he said he actually valued).

    His first film had:

    • a completely brain-dead villain, a villain with no legitimate reason to exist other than to be mean and scary (if you're five)

    • aping of Star Wars all over the place (like blowing up Vulcan, oh, I meant Alderaan, Scotty as Jar-Jar, etc., ships flying into orifices — scenes clearly designed to look like Star Wars)

    • character destruction (Spock and Uhura being the most egregious)

    • the complete flouting of the military code that TOS clearly showed was very very important — a code that Kirk even deferred to Spock about because the regulations mattered a great deal — at least in the episodes (instead of following any kind of legitimate military code, Kirk was put in a command position because... he looked the part?)

    • the gratuitous and inappropriate insertion of the Beastie Boys (ethnic naval-gazing/celebration)

And that's the film that people said is better than the sequel(s). I haven't bothered with those so I can't say. Anything worse than the first film is basically a matter of flogging the dead horse's skeletal remains. Vincent Horiuchi's review of the first film said it all: Set Phasers to Dumb for New Trek.

So, yeah, I am not surprised when someone who is not appropriate to the franchise is chosen to lead it. Hollywood is scraping the bottom of the barrel in so many ways these days.

And, JJ Dreck isn't the only terrible example. Archer literally gave an impassioned speech in favor of slavery, in Cogenitor. Tripp, the only person on the ship with any brains in that episode, acted like a bad puppy and then conveniently forgot it all ever happened in the next episode. Terrible. Enterprise devolved from there into "Insectoids! Reptilians! Creepy-Crawlies in Space!" human-stroking mindless action cheese.

    This is pretty awesome.

Honestly, Patrick Stewart was the only good thing about TNG growing up. There is definitely a certain delight in the laughably cringey and clunky elements that mostly compose TNG, but Patrick Stewart always kinda made you forget about that.

I disliked DS9 growing up as well, but it actually gets pretty good. The heavy-handed introduction of Bajorans as some sort of Israeli/Palestinian analogue seemed really confused and not well thought out, especially when the Cardassians were basically Nazi's. It was really well-tread territory at that point, and it didn't seem to be presented or developed properly. Despite this, the writer's eventually kinda leave that behind and a pretty great web of intrigue that isn't really reliant on this 'topic of the day' that kicks off the show.

Discovery...is just weird. It doesn't really feel very much like Star Trek...and they don't do very much Discovery-ing.

Old Star Trek was so funny and such a delightful mess. Remember when Kim died on Voyager and got replaced by the Kim from a parallel universe...and it never gets mentioned again?! So funny. The blandest character ever. They should bring Kim back just to reference this story-line again.

Maybe it'll be BSG redux, Starfleet gets fucked, and a retired Picard evacuates from his vineyard on earth, or job leading the academy, and ends up getting recommissioned as a fleet admiral to lead the resistence, using his diplomacy to get allies Mass Effect Style and lead some sweet fleet engagements.

Maybe I need to stop my pills

Too old to be at the rank of captain is the point. Him being captain wouldn't be explainable outside claiming he did something grossly out of character that got him demoted from admiral or above.

If all you see in Klingons is them being blood thirsty animal like barbarians, you have taken the most shallow and uninformed veiwpoint possible......but hey, don't feel bad...so has most of mankind as evidenced by how we treat each other.

Yeah, the klingons are not a barbarian warrior race, they just want to fight and kill for fun.

I also thought Voyager had the best series finale of any of the Star Trek series (that had series finales).

I am looking forward to see what they do with Picard in this new series.

Patrick Stewart has the best chance of bringing back some class to Star Trek out of all the actors in the franchise. He is by far my favorite captain of any Star Trek and the story of Picard has a lot left to tell in my opinion. This coupled with the possibility of seeing what comes after Voyager and Nemesis are tantelizing. I am super excited. It could end up being absolutely horrible, but I am going to give it a chance. Enough with the stories in the past, I want the future!

didn't know there was anyone that actually liked ST discovery, lol.. i tried to give the show a chance but it felt like they went out of their way to shit on the entire history of Star Trek.. at least with the movies there was only 1 real cross over which was done quite well in my opinion and they left it at that. as far as this new show i'm interested since i've always been a huge fan of Patrick Stewart ever since i watched TNG as a kid.

Having to bring in Patrick Stewart tells me they don't have anything actually drawing in fans, that are willing to pay anything, to increase revenue. Setting up a streaming service isn't cheap, and the trailer I saw for STD seems to be trying to market it as a wacky adventure show, which is a stark contrast to the first season.

If the numbers were great, or even good, they'd be bragging about them. They're not. Bringing in an actor for a show, that they seem to be wanting to market him as being the centerpiece of, after they went out of their way to try to differentiate their current products from that show, does not scream confidence to me.

This isn't so much about STD, as it is about every company wanting their own $5-$10 per month streaming service with a terribly limited amount of content. It's a crappy model that isn't going to work for most, since most people aren't willing to pay that money even if they have cut the cord(this is really the root of the problem for them) and saved a few bucks a month on one bill to immediately sign up for another 7 or 8 just to keep up with one show per service that they're interested in.

Amazon Prime video, has a bunch of channels to "subscribe" to for a few bucks a month, but at least has a fairly large amount of content with the regular prime sub.
Youtube Red, has next to nothing and frankly I doubt many people care since if the content creator they're watching goes "red only", there's a dozen other people to watch doing the same thing or similar.
DC, people are supposed to pay $80 a year or so for only shows based on DC comics characters? Come on.
Disney. Well, at least they've bought themselves a bunch of content.
Hulu, ads ads ads, but there's some content.
Netflix, has content, some pretty good stuff too.
CBS all access. $10 per month for no ads, $6 a month with ads, only has star trek and some sorts. Fuck off.
DirectTV, $40-$80/mo depending on channel bundles... no.
    ESPN+, another $5/mo for sportsball.
Filmstruck, few bucks a month for some indie movies, pay more for a few more movies.
HBO Now, $15/mo for HBO shows? pass.

Seriously, the way these are so split up, it's easy to end up paying MORE than a cable/sat subscription and actually end up with less content since every producer wants their own cut of the pie.

As others have said, this won't get me to subscribe to CBS' streaming service. Heh, $6 with ads, $10 without. It should be $2 at most or you know, free with ads on broadcast tv. Which isn't really free for some of us because my cable co. charges "rebroadcast fees" for the over the air networks. Since I can get those via antenna, can I cancel that from my cable tv package and save $5.99 per month? Hell no.

Anyway, I hope Mister Pickard aka Gentleman Johnny aka Patrick Stewart gets paid good bank for this and upfront, especially since CBS suing its parent corp Viacom for control.

"This is the power of math people!"

In the earlier days of Netflix and cord cutting, it seemed like we would achieve the impossible and really stick it to Mr. Corporation.

However, the money always wins, and here we are getting more streaming services than anyone can keep track of or afford. So, you get nickel and dimed to death. Before, you were just getting one big rod in the back - now you’re getting stuffed with a dozen pencils instead.

Well, that's exactly the problem isn't it. That we'd need mind reading skills to be able to get your meaning.

Speak plain, or don't complain when you're misunderstood. Or is that the goal, that you want to be misunderstood so then you can cry wolf?

  38. Who was complaining about being misunderstood ? It looks like its you, who needs to learn how to read.

    To recap.

    I said.

“Guess you missed the part where I said, “previously, they were played by both white and black actors”. < You can’t understand that ? fuck you and stop lieing.

    He replied.

    “Blah, not at all blah” However in reality, he lied to cover up his faux pas. Which was a photo trying to prove my “only blacks allowed” post was wrong. He then took it to a whole new dimension with;

“We both know what your real motivations are in this discussion”. < He can read my mind ? WTF Star Trek.

    You then join the party and say, he/you can’t read/understand my posts. Or should I say;

One who pretends that he can’t read/understand my posts. Probably because he heard someone else say it before, who also lied. When it gets down to the nitty gritty, going grammar nazi means you failed.

However, you decide “I will try and be cool and say the same thing”. <
Not cool, even if it wasn’t gay.

No, I did not miss the subtleties of sarcasm. As thats not what he meant.

I’am using an iphone and ipad. I do not give a shit about punctuation. I am also starting to wonder if schooling failed alot of you.
