In a surprise appearance at the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention, Patrick Stewart announced he would return to play Captain Jean-Luc Picard in a new Star Trek show for CBS’s streaming service. While it will not be a reboot of Star Trek: Next Generation, it will tell “the story of the next chapter of Picard’s life.”

“I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course,” Stewart said. “It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.”

Being bald certainly helps with hiding his age, he doesn't look any older than he was in TNG compared to that photo.

Looking forward to the new series, hopefully it's a more prolonged appearance and not just a cameo.

Just hoping it's live action. There is a rumor that one of the new series in development is animated. I'm not against that, just not for reusing my favorite characters.

If the same writers are in charge of this as discovery, I wish him luck in making this not a complete train wreck.

On the whole Stewart doesn't look too different, but in recent years he's developed those red rheumy eyes and weak voice that come with very old age.

It's the same deal with Mike in "Better Call Saul"; the perennial baldness helps hide the advancing age, but the eyes and voice don't lie. In Picard's case it isn't a problem because he's supposed to be older, but with "Better Call Saul" Jonathan Banks is playing a Mike who is supposed to be several years younger than the "Breaking Bad" Mike, and I have a difficult time suspending my disbelief on that count.

People forget that Patrick Stewart treated Star Trek as a temporary gig, often waiting for the show to flop. Plus, he is old, like 78 years old, which he does look great for his age but I doubt he's nimble and quick. So, to see him in another Star Trek doesn't give me much confidence in the show. Star Trek is all about the writing and if someone like Ronald D. Moore was to work on it, I'd be on board, but I doubt it.

Well at least they will have a likeable main character in this one. Not sure what they were thinking with Discovery. Loved that they tried to add grit, hated most of the characters to the point I was hoping they would go GOT on them and start wholesale killing them off. Never made it past ep7 of Discovery. Likely never will. Had to borrow a CBS all access account to even see that much.

    Freeman, without a doubt.

But damn, I havent seen any actor as pale as Stewart age so gracefully into their 70s. Maybe Harrison Ford? Bruce Willis is getting there, and Dany Trejo is already up there (but with a darker complexion).

You have to figure that Q is going to show up in this. Q and Picard are the best of frenemies after all.

  24. I preferred voyager to tng and ds9, the opening cgi was what got my attention. Plus it’s not a racist show as there was a token nigga, gook, native apu and a couple of midgets and many *crackers. NAACP and PETA approved.

Plus, 7 of 9 wears tight shit that shows off her paps admirably. Fuck the story line, I would watch it for that alone.

I Would even fuck janeway if it meant I could stick my face into 7 of 9’s tits whilst she was hooked up to her usb charger.

    Fucking crackers.

I'd downvote this post if I could.

I enjoy Voyager as I believe it had some stronger writing throughout, but the rest of what you describe is garbage.

Voyager was a great show, without a doubt. The Year of Hell episode's & the Scorpion were top notch.

What exactly made Star Trek Next Generation racist?

Sir Sean Connery. The man looked better at 70 than he did at 30.

Oh damn, Jonathan de Lancie is aging as well as Stewart.

But yeah. They'd have to work the plot around his appearances in Voyager (depending on the time the new show is set in), but we could definitely have de Lancie as Q.

I wish she had that much talent. At least Keenu could say "Whoah" with feeling.

No other ST Captain has ever been nearly as good as Kirk. Not as good as the original Kirk, and not as good as the reboot, either.

Please don't mess this up! But from what I've read, Stewart is pretty much what made TNG what it was - he demanded everyone rise to the high level of quality he was accustomed to as a stage actor, and you can see the improvement as the seasons progressed. I don't think Sir Patrick would put up with it being the drivel we've had to put up with lately.
