Parents, Your Porn Filters Don’t Keep Your Kids Away From Porn

A study by eggheads at Oxford Internet Institute has confirmed what most of us already know. Porn filters just aren't effective in preventing children form viewing pr0n on the internet. Parents out there need to realize the only way to prevent them from viewing pr0n is to supervise them when they are online. The moral of the story is don't expect some internet filter to be your baby sitter. Read the paper here.

In total, their study looked at 9,352 male and 9,357 female subjects from Europe and found that while almost 50% of the subjects had porn filter software running on their devices, the subjects still saw approximately the same amount of porn as people who browsed the web with no porn filters on their devices.

Internet filters are like door locks. They keep honest people honest. If you want to break through the door or adjacent glass window — there’s nothing stopping you.

For my part I’ve found OpenDNS helps to keep the “accidentally stumbled upon” stuff at bay, but at the end of the day it’s an individual’s own choice.

I blame the anti-porn people. They fought long ago to keep the .XXX domain from existing because "it would make porn freely available" or such back in the day. If, when starting the internet, it was decided that all porn could only exist on .xxx domains, then it would be much easier nowadays to block it, as you would just block the .xxx domain.

but that was an opportunity lost.

There are two ways to help gaurentee your kids stay safe:

1. Use confirmed whitelist like NetNanny, or Disney's Circle
2. Add a monitor that reports back all activity to the parents and request to new sites.

What qualifies as p@rn? Graphic sexual content? Nudity? Barely there bikinni's? Naughty Text? You can find that stuff on common sites that are quite popular but isn't their main purpose. For example: Corvette Forum has a section just for "babes in Bikinni's" leaning up against cars. And they have barely there bikinni's. I wouldn't want my 9 year old to see that because it conveys a bad image of objectification. But it's not XXX.

There's a lot of "bad stuff" on the Internet. I do advocate for kids not having direct Internet access except for a computer in a public space (could be in your house, just needs to be a open space where anyone could see the screen at anytime). Why? People are going to sin. They just are. But they prefer to do it in "secret".... when it's exposed, conscience tends to kick in. IMHO, this is better than trying to recreate The Boy in the Plastic Bubble (or Everything, Everything).

At work, I used to monitor outbound requests (part of my job).... and when I noticed a manger (usually it's a manager) surfing porn at work, I would casually drop by their office just to say hello and do some chit chat. After about the 10th time or so, they figured out that I came by to say "hi" anytime they were doing stuff they knew they weren't supposed to be doing.

I have no porn filters, just makes it more of a pain in my ass. I simply choose to educate my kids and accept the fact that they are going to make decisions I disagree with. Sort of like I did when I was a kid. Anyone who thinks they can absolutely control what their kids are exposed too are delusional.

Thanks for being the first to have rational thinking. Educate your kids and spend more time with them. Help engage kids in social activities with real friends and they will be occupied with something else. With all the crap online and offline porn is really far from the worst things kids can get exposed to and not most damaging either.

Porn filters are stupid. Why try to prevent the inevitable?

They're gonna see porn sooner or later.

I started looking at porn in the 4th grade, after I got my hands on my dad's porn mags.
Then I discovered I was not the only kid in school with porn.
Then I went to liquor stores to look at porn mags.

I turned out alright. It might have even helped me not to turn out gay, who knows.

So I'm going to expose my kids early, but educate them not to be like Donald and grab pussy without permission.

Sheltering kids is stupid.
The more you filter shit out, the more they want to see it. You get an unhealthy opposite reaction.
Just like withholding candy from kids.

oh, and that objectification argument doesn't fly. Objectification is always gonna be a thing, and admiring tits and ass doesn't necessarily mean you're degrading them.
men are objectified as much as women are. Just look at those firemen calendars and magic mike movies.
Women definitely masturbate to that shit.

Maybe not 100%, but monitoring your kids is a lot better than just trusting them. The less they see the less they think it is normal for 4 super hot teen girls to smoke a sausage.

Since when isn't that normal? Also I may need to bing this for research purposes.

Almost got to wonder if there's any correlation between the availability of every and any type of porn for the last two decades or so, and the lgbtwtfbbq movement that seems to be creeping into everything.

Porn being more visible can help young folks get a better handle on what kind of people sexually stimulate them, which is probably a good thing. Nothing is "creeping" in. People are simply being less homophobic douchecanoes about people that don't conform to their blind, idiotic, version of "normality".

Lol, how did I know someone would be offended. Stick whatever whereever, I just thought it interesting that it's a major movement after porn being so readily available for a generation. There's no reason to have it everywhere where sexual preferences has no relevance like it is in a lot of media today.

You need to identify as a rhino and get thicker skin. People are going to look at unnatural things as not normal. Be mad at the English language.

I'm not offended, I just stop caring what people think of me when it looks like they're bothered by how I was born. Apologies for reading it wrong.

The movement has been around for decades, pride parades started in 1970. I do think the internet has definitely spread awareness and has helped the younger generation feel less scared to talk about things like that.

Sexual preference really should have no relevance. The fuck does it matter if someone is gay, bi, straight, whatever? Having people of different sexual orientations in the media is a good thing. It means more notice, better acceptance, and less hate crimes.

Honestly, kids should not be doing jack on the internet. Once they turn teenagers, it's over.

I hope you are being sarcastic.

But maybe you should research some psychology papers on the effects of porn viewing on under age children. I'll give you cliff notes: It's not good.

You're right, I should have said teens (because they're going to see it whether you want them to or not) or young adults and not implied that I was talking even younger.

Our rule is we can review the kids digital devices anytime. Of course, I know they are going to be clever and try to disguise any activities they know are not inappropriate. I did!
We also try to teach them right from wrong so they can make good decisions. All it takes is to visit a friend or cousin who does not have any filters - they are going to see stuff eventually. No way to stop it.

While I'll tacitly agree with you that they will see it other places I can still control it in my own house.

At first I tried built in filters like strict web filtering and you tube restricted settings

But when my 8 year old son watched major league gamer on you tube and thought smoking dope was funny, I hauled out the big guns.

Disney circle and bit defender with app block (without pin) on all the mobile devices. New apps cannot be installed without a pin also.

I think we realised this when government employees were using google image search to see breasts and / or lunchmeats.

Well, of course you meant teens. I think it's sad you have to even clear it. Some people sure are touchy.

As a parent of a teenager, I can tell you internet porn is about the least of a parent's concern these days. A huge percentage of them take and share nude selfies. Many vape, even outside school. I could go on and on. Internet porn isn't even on my radar.

You've got it all wrong. Porn filters just might have been developed by teenagers so that parents anxieties would be relieved, because then those parents would get to believe that their children know nothing about sex, and cannot find anything out about sex. Basically, it allows adults to keep their heads in the sand. I was 9 years old when I found my dad's Playboy magazine stash. I always returned the magazines to exactly the very same place and the same condition as I had found them. I'm sure my mom and dad were secure in their belief that I never knew about the radical thoughts and depraved pictures of naked women within those pages. I suppose that they believed that I thought 'Playboy' was a magazine about playing board games or sports or something.
Same as today. My very close, conservative friends truly believe that their daughters would NEVER have sex before marriage, because that is what they preached. Both parents worked, and the kids were free to have their friends over while mom and dad weren't there, sometimes spending all day in their bedrooms with opposite sex friends 'studying' in the middle of the summer. Right. Studying. The parents actually thought that they were their children's best buddies, that their kids tell them everything. In a way, those gullible parents are, as they were providing a nice comfy sex place for their kids to do whatever they want.

Parents generally still don't want to discuss sex with their kids, and they want to believe that their kids don't have sex, don't even know about sex.
In America, sex is still something that is considered bad FOR ANYONE ELSE to do. They also believe that it's perfectly okay to massage your shoulder, but not your dick; Why? Because you might feel good, and feeling good isn't allowed in America unless you suffer and work hard for it, and especially if you are working to make some rich guy richer. Only then are you allowed a little fun. Some things never change.

Tell me more about your childhood and mudder

We do use Disney Circle - it works great and my wife can use it. (I used to have pfSense with a bunch of filters, but it was complex and no way could the wife do anything with it. Plus, it didn't cover as much and didn't work on cell phones when they left my network.)

Well soon you technocratic communist will be able to genetically alter kids to be born without eye sockets. That will prevent porn gazing.

And parents hiding their paper and VHS porn in the back of the closet didn't work either before the internet. Horny gunna horny one way or another.

Yep. Nevermind that someone ends up having an older brother or sister that can supply stuff your parents wouldn't want you to see. Be it porn, booze, etc. With porn someone is going to have access to it that will show their friends.

Hell when I was a teen when it was dial up we were trading porn on cdrs(that were a few bucks a shot then) that we downloaded off the internet. Video cds took forever to download over dial up.

We also had stuff like the terrorists handbook, jolly rogers cookbook and the anarchists cookbook. Its very hard to keep people from information.

Adults need filters too. Kids will get old enough to "boom boom" someone else at some point. If he/she wants to make videos and post it online, be it.

Some dude took a company laptop home for about 6 months; local IT asked the dude to bring it in for patching (cover story). Did a forensic acquisition and analysis, found porn on company laptop.
