Parents came home with pr0n detection knowledge from church...How do I get rid of it?

Kidding aside: Their ( your parents ) house, their rules.

I'd recommend you grasp that and hold on to it. They are doing you an immense favor ( you should be thanking them DAILY, if not HOURLY for it, btw ), you should at least have enough respect for them to follow their rules.

Christ, they pay for your car AND school?

HAHAHA you are 21 and your parents search your computer for porn? Jesus fuck.

Anyway, firefox has nothing to do with ie. There isn't a magic "clean all my porn history from ie" button. Also, don't use windows media player. It keeps all kinds of history shit all over. Use something like vlc or something for watching your movies. Actually, your best bet is to use open source software all over the board. Firefox for browsing and vlc for movie viewing. This way you can control exactly what logs they keep, and also they probably didn't tell your parents about those programs in church. But shit, man, if you are fucking 21 and living at home for free then maybe you ought to respect your parents a bit instead of trying to hide stuff from them. I'm only 19, but living in the dorm is a hell of a lot better than living at home, even though I do have to pay $5000/year for room and board. Now I think I am going to watch some of my porn in my room now with my parents 150 miles away. :D

You know, historically, when you turn threads like this into a life-help thread, they get locked. Example: Laforge's thread from a few months back. He just wanted an outside opinion of what to buy to make his computing experience more enjoyable, and it turned into thread that he should spend the money on something for his fiance. Yeah, thats certainly going to improve his computing experience

Why do ppl use FireFox anyways??? I don't understand why..for more security over stuff or something??? Is it more customizable?? Not keep logs??? Never really understood why ppl don't like IE

Well you've obviously never used anything but IE. Just about every other browser is superior to IE. IE is a moped whereas Firefox and Opera are motorcycles. Firefox has tabbed browsing, built in popup blocking, adblock to block annoying flash bullshit, and a lot of other stuff. And it is open source. I really don't understand why people use IE now that there are better browsers.

ok,
here are a few reasons - it is very customizable (even has a drag/drop box of addons to ease add/removal) it has a one button clear of cookies/history/saved passwords/saved info - it is smaller (less bloat) and runs faster than IE - and is safer on the net (as most bad sites are written for the most used browser- IE...)
Go try it yourself... easy download...
mozilla.org
(or try mozilla too)

Seconded. The history clearing features aren't very good, and its got exploits across the board due to its integration into Windows.

I use firefox as my main browser, and love it to death. Tabbed windows, history clearing, all that neat stuff. I set mine up to never record anything other than cookies, and no one can see any webpage I've visited since I installed it. Fantabulous.

I've often wondered this myself. I think its just ignorance, really. I mean, I used an early build of Mozilla for one day, and uninstalled within 24 hours: it was just that buggy. I installed FireFox the day it came out, and it became my default browser. If the average windows user had a choice between FireFox and IE, they'd probably pick FireFox. Lack of exposure = lack of use.

I loaded up MSNBC.com the other day to read an article, and the lining up was all wrong, like it wasn't supporting Mozilla. Thats the only compatibility issue I've had.

I'm using firefox, but that's only because I want to give it a fair chance in comparison to IE. So far, I have seen NOTHING that warrants this over IE. There were so many small things that I liked more about IE that firefox doesn't do. For example, I have a habit of clicking on the mouse wheel to scroll and then when im close to where i want to go I just scroll the wheel up or down and it goes out of "free scroll" mode. In firefox it doesn't. Also, the Go button at the bottom of most forums are misaligned and that bugs me a little bit. Tabbed windows are pointless. Reinstalling plugins was annoying, but small. Having to do extra configuration to get it the way I like it != a good browser. IE has everything in the perfect configuration in the way I browse the internet. Also, Firefox is NO faster than IE for me and is sometimes even slower. I'm in like the 2% minority I know, but I still maintain my views that other browsers are not that great.

Security okay but features??? The only other "feature" I wish IE had was a download accelerator and popup control...can't think of any other "features" a browser could have...I think just because I have nothing to do this spring break I'll learn FireFox...

Are you kidding? I currently have 28 tabs in this window and 5 in another. Tabs most certainly aren't pointless. Much better than having 28 buttons in the task bar.

You probably started using the web with internet explorer, so you formed your habits around it. Now that you are used to it, it is perfect for you because that's how you learned. That's okay if you prefer IE though. We're just giving suggestions here and if someone wants to follow up on them then that's good; we're not trying to change anyone's habbits.

There is nothing to learn. It is a browser, not a language. Just download it and use it. No need to wait. Do it now.

I have always questioned how popup blockers work...I mean there are many popups that I DO want and are good...how does it know which popups are good and which are bad???

Generally, it will still pop up popups that you request by clicking on a link or something. They will block popups that are set to load when you load or unload a page or something like that. In any decent popup blocker you can set rules if you want to set it to always pop up from a certain website or something.

It checks an ad server list to see if its on that.. at least the good ones do. Or, it checks to see if it was a "requested" pop-up. If you click and its not loading a pop-up you want, you hold the disable key (usually control) and it will turn off the pop-up blocker for that link for the moment.

Anyways I'm going to say try using firefox instead of IE. It is a hell of alot better.

Don't hide the porn........

Just them your folks that you need porn for peace. I am sure they will be sympathetic to your committment to a worthy cause.

Link edited, the oneCloset is long gone -Ice Czar

You could always challenge your dad and ask to search his computer for porn, because what are the chances that he hasn't looked. Or if you are little evil you could make it so when they search your comp for porn it messes something up and act like it will take for ever to fix. A good over reaction will make them never want to touch your computer again.

Because the cheeze keep bumping it. It's at the top right now so don't go finger pointing at me. Feel free to not post and let it die, rather than commenting :)

back on topic, using firefox for web browsing is great, I would switch to that and just let it clear your stuff when ever you feel the need for security and cleansing as well if you clear out the my documents and run your favorite media players with some benign files, to clear out the histories. also just run a search for some .avi .mpg and the like to make sure you got it all. just to be extra sure password protect your computer to make it less easy to search without your knowledge. if you are good in batchfiles or programming you could have a program to clear this type of stuff out for you. Hope this helps in your dirty habits.

Or, just format your harddrive and re-install all your programs and be more careful about what you put into your computer. Since they pay for everything for you, wouldn't this be easier than trying to find stuff you have forgotten about and causing you to piss your parents off.

More features = slower usually

Tabbed = I have to click in the taskbar, then click on the tab, thats one more click than I really want...

GoogleToolbar will block Popups

I have no reason to block flash

^ My opinions

I'll live with IE

EDIT: Earlier someone said they had like... 28 tabs open in firefox... why in the world would you ever need so many pages open? Thats insane... I usually have 3 at the most. A forum, a news side, and something else I might be looking at.

Not in this case. The features are there, but they don't just all load at the same time or whatever. I don't even know what you mean by that.

You can have multiple firefox windows open.
GoogleToolbar will block Popups
That is something you have to download. It is an added feature, so according to you that makes it slower. On top of that, it is an external program made by a third party, as opposed to firefox, where popup blocking and the search box are built in. Third party plugins usually can't reach the level of integration and efficiency of built-in features.
I have no reason to block flash
okay

I was the one with 28 tabs open. It's not insane. I like learning. I may have several different tutorials or guides open at once, and switch among them. It's much more efficient this way. Instead of going to a site, reading it, then going to another site, and then wanting to go back to the other site, I can just open a new tab and have them both open. When I am done with a site I will close the tab.

I'm the same way (though probably 10-20 tabs). The other thing with the tabs is that the GameSpy Daily email I subscribe to takes over the last active IE/FF window. In IE, instead of opening another window, it will change the active window to the link. In FF, however, I can open a new tab, and it will use that for the link. Repeat for all the links I want from the email, and I'm all set.

The only error I've had with FF that caused me hassle was it crashing, killing all 12 tabs and the download manager. To make matters worse, I was downloading the UT2k4 demo at the time. :(

He's looking for a hardware solution to a moral dilemma. However, its not like you can suggest that he simply stops. Its his right as someone over the age of 18 to look at pornographic material, and so he is going to do it. He is looking for a way to hide it.

What if your parents came over to your house, and scolded you for looking at pr0n? It's the same principle here. The only difference is that his room is the equivalent of your home, and the distance between your parents and you is a exponentially less. That doesn't change anything.

Indeed

4...3...2...1

now its dead :p

Its been thrashed around enough, and I think all basic points of view expressed a few times over, as far as "technical" issues go, another thread could be started for browser debate, and the basics of hiding data has been addressed
