I was "attempting" to overclock my son's Phenom 9600 Black Edition last night to give him a little better gaming experience with Bad Company 2. Are these 9600BE like the worst overclockers ever or what? I could only get 100mhz out of it. I tried upping the voltage on the CPU, then the NB, then both, and I could never get it to boot to Windows at 2.5Ghz. I read people get 3Ghz out of these things... how in the heck do they do it?

His mainboard is: ASUS M3A78-EM AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

The CPU is the original Phenom with the TLB bug: AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 95W Quad-Core Processor

yes they are the worst overclockers ever..................they had a better board, and a great chip.......i've got a 9850 that is not stable above 2.9 ghz.......your best bet is to go and get a new CPU if you can afford it...

He has a HD4670 512 video and 2GB of RAM.

I am upping the RAM to 4GB and maybe later on at tax return time, I can snag him a better video card... something in the $100 range at that time... like a 5770 or a 6000 series equivalent.

I borrowed his video card when mine went down and my E8400 at 3.7GHz drove it much better and at a higher resolution with higher settings. So, it's very apparent in that game (BC2), he is being limited by his CPU.

Indeed. The 9600 is one of the worse overclocking processor on the market, I think. I certainly never got mine above 2.8 ghz, and that was after dumping 1.7 vcore on the stock vcore. I sold it within 2 weeks of possession.

Your best bet is to go with a confirmed quad, like Athlon II X4 620 or something similar, as those can overclock to 3.8-3.9 fine.
