I'm trying to shoot wireless a little ways down the road to my friends house. I've found a lot of omnidirectional antennas but not so much for directional. Other than using the old coffee / pringles can method does anyone have low cost recommendations?

Hooking up to a WRT54g of course.

You need directional antennas on both ends. The router is less of a signal power problem than the wifi-adapter. You can't have a connection unless both can talk with each other.

common directional antennas would be

Yagi antenna
Dish antenna
Grid antenna
Sector/Sectoral antenna

for what you want to do dishes would probably be your best bet... check out the stuff ubiquiti has, a lot of them have the radio built into the antenna so you just run network cable/poe to it
