Currently still running strong on my reference 7970s from Jan 2012. I was wondering if people here are rushing to sell their 7900 series of gpus now as the prices on Ebay have dropped quite a bit already. Would the opinion here be that a single R290 will provide a consistently better experience than dual 7970s?

A 280X is a rebrand of a 7970, a 280 is a rebrand of a 7950. So marginal performance increases to be expected, maybe a bit mroe than marginal compared to reference cards, but a single 280 will not outperform a single 7970 most likely.

From the leaked info on Asus 280x, the only difference was the clockspeed (1050~1100mhz (from 1000 mhz) for the chip and 6.4ghz memory (from 6 ghz memory)).

Since ghz editions with 1100 mhz clock were already available, I'm curious how much of an effect that the increased speed in the memory will have.

Sorry I meant an R290. I'm asking because if I can conservatively sell the 7970s for about 250 on Ebay, it seems like I'd have to shell out another 250-300 for the R290s from their leaked prices on newegg.

With the monitor(s) you are running in your sig, 2*7970 are fine. That's even if Mantle doesn't give a large performance improvement.

There's no reason to go the 290x yet. Maybe next year or if you move to a 30" or 120fps.
