Virtualization is built into the upcoming kernels! Soon you won't need any extra software...
you mean is in the kernels right now. Linux kernel has had it for quite a while. you will still need a program

Errr, yes you will. See post above as to one of the reasons why. You still need the front end, the vehicle if you like. Host OS support makes the application and hypervisor run for lack of a perfect word, better.
Now, you may have apps native to the OS. A package for your linux distro, but FTP is still an application, as a virtualization app will be.
nop not XEN or KQEMU (or whatever VMWARE's kernel blob is)
These three while provide a module to the kernel to access an Intels VT or AMD's AMD-T, I am talking about KVM which is in the kernel-source since 2.6.20
